Did you really need a blog post to tell you how awesome The Pilot episode of H50 is?
No. You really did not. Thanks for reading anyway.
So here is what we have: We have the pilot episode of H50.
There is an ongoing plot arc surrounding the John McGarrett murder & the mystery of the Champ Box. But we really can’t get much into that because The Pilot also introduces us to the Governor’s Task Force — and what is that all about, hmm?
This is the episode that establishes what “the new kind” of police officer looks like (much to Sang Min’s dismay) the components of which are:
1) Using Non-traditional Police Procedures such as ignoring an individual’s civil liberties (the entrapment of Sang Min)
2) Using Physical Violence to advance the investigation (Chin walloping Sang Min across the face with the ash tray)
3) Using Emotional Manipulation to advance the investigation (McG telling Sang Min he knows where his wife & kid are and can’t stop them from being sent back to Rwanda, etc.)
4) Book ’em Danno (exemption from prosecution using the methods listed above in Steps 1-3)
This is what, if Kono had her way, we would call “Strike Force” policing. This is what the Governor called “immunity & means.” This is how Crimes Are Solved on H50. And it is a pattern established in The Pilot.
Like all good Pilot episodes, it introduces us to the Show’s core characters: McG, Danno, Chin & Kono as well as the recurring characters of Gov. Jameson, Grace Williams, Victor Hesse, Kamekona and Sang Min. Rachel Edwards is in the episode but on the phone & off screen. So let’s meet The Team.
Steve McGarrett. In The Pilot, McG’s BAMF-ometer is off the charts. We meet him as SEAL-Steve. He shows off his fist fighting/martial arts abilities and runs around after the bad guys (that’s not a figure of speech I mean literally, he spends a lot of time running around in this episode).
McG has a multitude of character beats demonstrated in this episode as we see him personally help the Victim of crime, use his “Science Guy” abilities to creatively find clues, speak a foreign language, generally be a smart-ass and he still finds the time to take off his shirt (busy ep).
Next we meet Chin Ho Kelly, a former-cop-now-security-guard working at Pearl Harbor, an alum of the same High School McG attended & an ex-coworker of John McGarrett. He’s the one who alerts McG that there’s “a haole working your father’s case.” We cut directly to said haole.
Our intro to Danny Williams is no less well-executed as we meet him (in basically the one scene McG’s not in) picking up his daughter for school. He’s hard working, frustrated, well-intentioned and a great dad.
What we come to expect from Danny going forward we also get here in The Pilot: Danny doesn’t love Hawaii, he doesn’t appreciate Rachel & Stan’s affluent lifestyle, he doesn’t hesitate to tell you his thoughts & feelings, he deflects personal comments really well, and he’s an excellent shot (got Doran in the head from behind & Etienne in the kneecap after rolling across the deck of the cargo ship). Finally, and most importantly: McG’s know-it-all attitude and single-mindedness drives him INSANE.
Now I can NOT go into “What Bromance Is” here, I just don’t have the space. But take a minute & imagine there is a brilliant treatise on Bromance & What It Is right –>here.<– Got it? Ok, let's continue.
Our dynamic duo now returns to Pearl Harbor to recruit the reluctant Chin Ho to the team. While it's obvious Chin wants to help hunt down the human traffickers, he knows there's no way he'll be allowed to as a regular police officer. McG recruits him anyway.
McG liberates Chin Ho from rubber-gun-dom & the first thing Chin Ho does is change into a BOLDLY PATTERNED HAWAIIAN SHIRT (or as they call them in Hawaii, “shirts”). The second thing he does is connect them with Kamekona. The third thing he does is call up Sang Min’s jacket on an iPad. The fourth thing he does is invite Kono to join the madness. Thus, 99% of what you need to know about Chin Ho Kelly you have learned in a couple short scenes. He’s a snappy dresser, connected, good with tech & a mentor to his young cousin. And speaking of!
Much is made of Kono’s BAMF-ness: she’s a pro-level athlete, she cold-cocks guys who “drop in on her wave,” she’s not afraid to go undercover & remove her clothes while surrounded by 3 or 4 thugs with guns. However, what differentiates her from McG, the character trait unique to Kono, is Enthusiasiam. Kono is Excited about being a police officer. Kono has the confidence of youth and inexperience. She wants to call team “Strike Force” because it would be cool to have a name. Kono is Thrilled To Be Here.
And so are we. The sun sets on our little team, enjoying some beer & bonding. Ooh-Rah! We have met the team and been introduced to the basic format for Show.
Based on my (at this time secret) criteria I’m giving this ep a 9/10 (seriously it only loses points because there’s so little screen time for Chin & Kono which is kind of unavoidable). The Pilot episode is probably as close to perfect an ep as Show gets for me — I’m going to be BRUTAL in my (for now secret) grading critera so I don’t expect many episodes to grade higher than this one. It’s probably one of my favorite episodes of H50, full stop.
See here I am faced with the dilemma of being friends with you Steph. We both live on the west coast, but of completely different Countries. Which means I’d love to sit here & discuss this with you all might however youve posted this just before bed. Hmmm, still tomorrow is another day. Ooh, get me? I went all Madonna on you then.
Anyway, in summary, I totes loved this episode.
It’s 2:30 in the afternoon! Oh you mean your bedtime. Not mine. Ok then.
Yes, Madge, let’s discuss tomorrow. 😉
Thank you!! I was nervous about posting it so thanks for your encouragement.
The pilot for sure sets the bar high. I still love it and will always love it. I don’t think it will ever be a non-top 5 episode for me.
Set the bar SO high, I agree. It’s a really really good Pilot episode of television, just generally speaking.
James Marsters said there is a rating that they give pilots when they show them to the network people to see if they’ll be picked up or not and the H50 pilot scored the highest rating that CBS has ever had.
That is SO COOL and also 100% believable. Is that just based off the script, do you know? or the filmed pilot?
Based on the filmed pilot. He talks about it here. http://youtu.be/mYl8TRzM-iI
How have I not seen that before!! He is DELIGHTFUL. Alex is Made of Cake!!! Love that Ess thanks for sharing. 😀
Victor Hesse.. R.I.P.
yes, after seeing his interviews, i loved victor even more. Still sad they killed him off.
I’m going to guess that in the secret rating system this ep also got points (a zillionty) because James Marsters is awesomesauce.
Yes, he’s ***#1 good guest star.*** Love me some Victor Hesse! I also always really loved Jean Smart as the Governor & I’m really gonna try to let the fact that she turned into a baddie not influence how I rate her appearances. But the ep also gets guest star points for Sang Min, Kamekona & Gracie. Not to mention the dude that plays Doran, the gun runner that Danno shoots in the back of the head. PIVOTAL role, when you think about it, in the super-fast evolution of the relationship between McG & Danno that we get in the Pilot.
I also liked the dude who played Anton Hesse I think he is the bees knees these days with the zombie lover crowd… SPURSY, where are you? Tell me how awesome is Norman the dude who was Anton Hesse before he became a zombie killer?
But yes, James Marsters is literally the reason I attempted to go to sleep with my eyes open back in college after one too many episodes of Buffy. Love him!!
A zillionty! LOL.
PILOT sucked my in big. And that was b4 I was all about the McG.
I fell in love with Show before it even started. I was hooked based on the trailer that CBS put online during the summer.
My brain went something like this:
…hey, that’s the Hawaii 5-0 theme! Cool!
…ooh! boats! cars! chases! blowing things up! shiny!
…Boomer! Cool!
…Jin! Cool!
…Scott Caan! Cool!
…who the hell is that smokin’ hot sonofab/tch… asdfghjklkjhgfsa… *drool*
…book’em Danno! EEK!
I’M SO GONNA WATCH THIS SHOW!!!
Wait, I’ve just read as far down as Danno’s entrance (No, not that – cheeky) onto show. Knuckles – really? I can honestly say I have never heard of anyone before going ooh look at his knuckles!! Wow!
I knew you would think I was crazy!!
Well I can’t say that I’ve looked at Scott’s knuckles before, I know…shocker!! but as someone with a major hand kink, he does have nice knuckles….as far as knuckles go. 😉
Figured you guys could be in raptures over arm veins & eyebrows, you’d give me a little leeway on knuckles. 😉
You get all the leeway you need, babe. After all, I’ve got a thing for McG’s feet.
Not too crazy. I stare at this hand to check out his tat…
his teeny tiny little tat
Alex & Scott sure must have had a funny conversation discussing their tattoo making decisions & philosophies, woulda loved to have been a fly on the wall for that one.
since I don’t know when either of them got their tats, I ask you to suspend your disbelief, but I am pretty sure the story went like this:
Scott, after spending the morning surfing is excited to go into work today because he gets to show his BFF, Alex, his new tattoo.
Meanwhile, a few streets over, Alex, after spending the morning trying to surf, is also excited about getting into work because he wants to show his BFF, Scott his new and improved back tat.
They both head off to set and Alex rocks up to Scotts trailer and knocks on the door. Alex waits and checks to see if Essendon beat West Coast and is happy to find out that they did. “sweet” he mutters to himself. Finally Scott, beaming, opens the door, “Alex! I have to show you my tat!”
*Finally decided to join the dark side*, Alex thinks to himself. “Cool mate. Me too!”
Scott goes “ok you first.”
So Alex rolls up his t-shirt and shows off his new and improved back tat.
Scott smiles and then sticks up his hand and goes “so how are we gonna break this to the make up department???”
I am literally dancing with happiness!!! Infant you have made me SO HAPPY!!
Yay. Mission accomplished. 😀 Happiness for all.
infant comes up with the best scenarios…
Why thank you. Too bad I never remember them. I know I made one up for you.
I suspect they might have broken the news with so much alcohol that it took the make-up department the best part of half a season to sober up.
I loved this especially:
“Scott, after spending the morning surfing…. Meanwhile….Alex, after spending the morning trying to surf…”
It’s the little things!
“I loved this especially:
“Scott, after spending the morning surfing…. Meanwhile….Alex, after spending the morning trying to surf…”
It’s the little things!”
You know Alicia, I almost didn’t write the trying bit. I thought is some passionate Alex fan going to get upset and say he almost died as a teenager/young adult how can you joke about his lack of surfing talent, but then figured since the whole situation was obviously a joke, it would be okay. 😀 Glad it translated.
Poor make up, bet they’re the only ones who hate shirtless Alex scenes. 😉
It’s worrying that it’s a worry, hm? But then he himself says he’s not very good (although I suspect this is probably not entirely true).
ok good point. I’ll put my daggers away. 😉
LOL! You do that mate. 😉
“Poor make up, bet they’re the only ones who hate shirtless Alex scenes” – ONLY if they’re straight men! I mean, i bet even lesbians (no h8) would love to feel around on that. Me? I’d read it like a braille library book…
“oh wait, i missed a spot right…there…oh and another…”
“since I don’t know when either of them got their tats, I ask you to suspend your disbelief, but I am pretty sure the story went like this:”
‘Alex waits and checks to see if Essendon beat West Coast and is happy to find out that they did. ‘
I think the key phrase here is ‘suspend your disbelief’ 🙂
Bahaha I was wondering how long before you came along and saw my shout out to my fellow countrywoman. 😉 I also did it in part because it was the only team we really talk about so I didn’t want to confuse people with another team.
You mean another team like those evil Magpies? (Hoping Jess from Oz isn’t lurking here!)
He had the criss tatt before… The one he got when Alex was there I haven’t seen yet…. could it be a teeny tiny last supper?
Now the question is, is the teen tiny last supper the original version or the Battlestar version with Six in the middle? 😛
I actually just learned what that one was this morning – it’s three little dots that form a triangle, I guess it originated as a gang/prison tattoo and/or the three dots represent the trinity or what have you? Kind of goes with the cross, I guess? Anyway, I guess it alternately has come to mean “my crazy life” in hispanic culture (this is just what I read this morning I have no idea if it’s true or not).
You can see it in two eps from season 2, first during the Gracie gets Kidnapped ep when he’s at the post office going through the mail, and in the most recent new ep, during the scene when Tony “introduces” them to Kamekona, he scratches his head with his left hand… you get a brief blurry look at it there.
I obviously don’t pay attention… I have never noticed this tatt!
I think the first time I noticed it was the ep when Chin had the bomb around his neck and Danny unclips it.
They are both so teeny tiny, just pea-sized really & located on that chubby, webby area between your thumb & pointy finger.
Steph ! 9/10 ?
BUT, BUT what about, the best stunt EVAH ? McG slides across car on his A$$ ? Wheeeeeee !
Danno punches McG in the face. You’re right, I don’t like you!”
And lest we forget, Black Keys .. Sinister Kid !
Ya sure, your arm can’t be twisted to reevaluate as 10/10 ?
Can’t hurt to ask …. good review !
I really do like that stunt……. actually really do, it’s the one I pointed out to hubby when we were watching it the other night, he wasn’t really paying attention & I was all “watch this stunt!”
And The Black Keys, I am so obsessed…….. (there will actually be more about this shortly…! Not kidding!!)
Honestly, I gave this ep full marks for action & “extras” that includes the music…. AAHHH belive me, I want to give it 10/10 my heart says GO FOR IT but then my brain says, be brutal because it’ll just be sad when no other ep ever beats The Pilot for quality, it’s all been downhill from here…
…. Which is why YOU are conducting the reviews!
Love it !
Glad to know we’re pretty much all on the same page about this episode being one of the best (that is until Westy shows up!)
Hey, in my defence, upon rewatch, the pilot KICKS A.SS! My re-evaluation has absolutely nothing to do with my obsession with McG. Not.a.thing.
It would be sad..but the truth is hard. Very few eps HAVE lived up to the pilot. There are only 3 in my book that compare, out of 41 epis. There rest vary greatly.
And that is still the greatest.stunt.evah! good call lb!
Did it ruin the illusion of #The.Greatest.Stunt.Evah! when you found out how they did it with editing on S1 DVD extras?
It made me relieved that no one was really in danger of becoming the pb in a car bumper sandwich. Plus, AOL still did a cool and v v important part of the stunt with his v v lovely bottom. Then it’s #editing.room.magic. I can live with that.
I now question how they do ALL their stunts and know they are probably not nearly as cool as they are in show. Still I couldn’t slide off the boot (trunk for your OS folks) of a car. I’d face plant into the wind shield or something lame.
LOL! I’d so totally be laying in the road. Or I would stick instead of slide.
CGI or not, BEST.STUNT.EVER.
I’ve never wanted to be the trunk of a car before this….
I wouldn’t even be able to get my *ss high enough to slide across the car. *sighs* I’d need to carry a little ladder with me just on the off chance it’s needed! So for me it remains Best.Stunt.Evah!!!
It’s still the best.stunt.evah!! in my book. However, after watching the DVD extra and seeing him land differently in the take that made it to the extra, i wonder how many times he had to scoot across it and did he bruise his bum? He probably couldn’t sit for a week. Thank god for the ADHD…..(J/K!!!)
Thank god for ice packs???
Or those little round butt pillows they give to people with hemmorhoids (sp?)??? 😆
Now that’s an image I could live without. 😛
Now look what you’ve done. I want to watch this ep again! I have a feeling I’ll be doing a re-watch one episode behind you. 😉
Dude. I am not even DONE with The Pilot yet. More to come!!
RE: Kono’s suggestion for name of Team. I think that she is a fan of The Shield and Farmington District Strike Force. That’s her fantasy of proper police procedure. You don’t learn those tactics at the academy.
KEVIN HIATT CALL ME!
Watching The Pilot with hubby after Kono makes her suggestion he brings up this page (this is his Strike Force pop culture reference): http://www.wwe.com/inside/titlehistory/worldtagteam/304454132122111
I was like…. …… ………..
Ewwwwww………………..
[runs off to wash out eyes with soap]
Steph, this review made me laugh so much. This is my SEAL face nearly had me spilling my cup of tea all over my laptop.
I rewatched the pilot not long ago and it reminded me of how I fell in love with show. I watched the pilot when it aired here at Sheila’s advice, not all that keen as I don’t normally watch cop shows. I watched it. 😀 Then they repeated it later in the week and I had set for to be recorded because I KNEW I KNEW I would love this show and wanted all the eps recorded.
Sorry about the laptop but SEAL FACE!!!!!! it’s on screen for like, a quarter of a second I kid you not. Love love love SEAL FACE. Thank you for saying so, I was worried it was only me. 😉
Oh, I love hearing “how I fell in love with Show” stories!! Hooray for Sheila!
I fell in love with Show because NotMcG MADE me watch it.
That hasn’t backfired on him at all, noooo.
HAhahahhahahaha oh that’s rich. 😀 That is awesome.
“I fell in love with Show because NotMcG MADE me watch it.
That hasn’t backfired on him at all, noooo.” – oh I’m bettting he benefits from show every once in a while… 😉
Just once in a while…..
Between me and Ess, Steph it’ll never just be you. 😉
You probably know my story but I knew i had to watch show because it was Hawaii and i love everything Hawaii. Not McG too. Bonus, the show was really good!!
Watched for plot until after epi 19 when I saw an H50 PSA for the Japanese tsunami victims and I heard Alex speak in his Aussie accent. He went from that good looking dude on H50 to HOLY.HELL.WHO.IS.THAT?? I watched a few interviews and the rest is history…
I am eternally grateful to Hawaii. True. Story.
Aloha for Japan. My lazy ar$e never got around to buying one. Will have to track one down in HI.
Thanks for this Steph J,
You’ve given me an excuse to rewatch, as if I needed one.
LOVE the Pilot. There’s so much great stuff in it. Great cinematic, a*smashing beginning but we immediately start to care about the characters as we see Steve witness his father’s murder over the phone.
Steve in uniform – impossibly good looking.
Love the bit when Steve and Danny meet. Danny saying he’ll get an ambulance for Steve if he doesn’t back down. Steve only agreeing to the set up the Governor’s task force because he’s impressed by Danny’s policing.
Carguments, Danny punching Steve. Danny gets shot – he hardly ever gets hurt, it’s always Steve.
To be contd after Real Life.
I love McG & Danno’s conversation in the garage!! everyone always talks about the guns drawn (which is understandable) but their conversation there is SO IMPORTANT & like you, I’m of the mind that it was Danny that inspired McG to call the governor — not just the Champ Box. 😀
Oh I absolutely agree that Danny was the inspiration for him calling the governor! Remember Steve’s a winner/topper…depends on the circumstance. Here he was for def a topper. *heh*
Had to one-up the guy who called him Barbara Walters & made him smile – probably his first smile since that phone call with Victor.
You are doing this because you LOOOOOVE us and want to make us happy. (It’s working, in case you were wondering.)
Love your review. Extra points for use of the word ‘walloping’, because it is a superb word.
Re: Danny’s knuckles – you are crazy, you are not looking far enough up the arm. You should be looking at where his arms are about to make a break for freedom in those spoilsport Not T-shirts he wears – the delts and the way they gently curve down towards the biceps and… and… what was I saying?
I had to focus…. the caption of that one picture could have been as long as the entire post itself, I tell you! 😉
OK. Have rewatched. (Loving this chance to discuss the episodes).
Another name for this ep could be DFTTF (Danny’s fist to the face).
At the end when Danny says ‘You look really bad’ – he caused some of that!
The Governor ‘What you see is what you get with me Commander’… How did we not know??? 🙂
When I first saw it I was a bit confused by what was going on in the beginning. Think I thought Steve was in the helicopter. Have since worked it out. Fits with his personality that he shoots Anton because he is about to finish off a colleague even though it puts his father at more risk.
Had thought Steve gets shot in the vest at the end but he has a pad near his collar bone.
1/2 point has to come off the perfect 10 for the following: Steve says ‘There’s something you should know about your brother…..[long pause while Victor, gun in hand could have shot him 10 times over] ‘he died the same way you did’.
Danny’s roll!!
Steve driving the car onto the boat.
I keep having to check the Pilot was a normal length episode. So much was packed in. It was so tightly written.
“long pause while Victor, gun in hand could have shot him 10 times over”
SO true! And it was such a sh/t line as well.
Yeah, it was a sh/t line. Victor deserved to live just for that.
Amen to that.
Looks like your reviews are going to be more character and team orientated. Hope I am getting the right feeling. To me that is the backbone of the story and if they develope that, any stupid prosedural they dig up, will still be entertaining to me….
I imagine that most of the points system you use also belong to that….and then of cause some shitlessness etc. Think the only episode that might get a 10 would be one with pantslessness 😉
Hi FOYeur! You are absolutely getting the right feeling. I am one of those people who don’t think **too** hard about the case-of-the-day – I just take everything as it comes and as long as there isn’t too much insulting clarica or blatant contradictions in the plot, I come away with a good feeling. I watch for the characters, their relationships & the humor. How they work together to solve problems/cases or help each other out. I also like action sequences when they’re well done & H50 has awesome action as you well know. 😉
Also I think you mean SHIRTlessness?? 😆
Oh Sh/t, yes. There should always be some sh/t flying around in every episode, and if not, I would deduct points for it. On the other hand ShiRtlessness of any of the male charaters & one with all of them together, should rate very high………
On a more serious note – the baring of emotions, in my book, can be a lot s:xier than any clotheslessness……
Sh/t on a stick! I thought I had followed this blog. Now I’m behind. =(
YAY I’m glad you’re here!!!!
I am the only person in the whole world who thought the pilot was ‘ok’? Not McG and I watched it and while we enjoyed it, it didn’t blow us away. I remember us saying to each other that we’d give the show a couple of weeks more watching before deciding whether to stick with it.
And yet, on rewatch when the DVD came out, we both thought it was great.
It’s definitely better on rewatches, when you know the characters.
I think The Pilot was meant to “suck you in” by putting so much good material out there. Of course it’s not going to work for everyone, but the idea is, if The Pilot didn’t work for some people, they probably didn’t turn in the next week. So not liking the Pilot & still watching the show going forward puts you in a minority opinion for sure! So I’m curious to know how many eps you had to watch before you decided you liked it, and how many you had to watch before you decided YOU REALLY LIKED IT. 😆 Because it doesn’t matter to me how we all got here, we’re here now & that’s what’s important.
Let’s just say after the second ep, I decided I liked it. I decided I REALLY LIKED IT after the third ep.
My obsession with McG had nothing to do with it. Not.a.thing.
🙂
The 3rd ep huh…? Can’t wait until we get there & you can tell us all why!
Considering you don’t like TOF, it doesn’t suprise me, Westy. *heh*
I saw a preview of the pilot before it aired and it basically just showed the beginning w/McG shooting Anton and Victor shooting his Dad. I had the brief thought that the show may be too violent to my liking and almost…ALMOST didn’t watch!! Again, thank you Hawaii for being such awesomeness that i couldn’t resist. Especially since we’d just got back from HI. (don’t ask me about missing SOTB by a week..grr!)
Holy smokes! Imagine if you never watched! We’d be so deprived and I don’t know your chain of Alex watching but does that mean no h50, no ML thus no Alex and no H50BAMF?! Lucky you didn’t listen to yourself.
Yes, but TOF was b.o.r.i.n.g! 🙂
It was not. Stop saying that. 😛
Steph J
When do you hope to review Ep 2 so I can rewatch in good time? (No pressure!!)
