Beth attends the execution of a serial killer, and meets one of his victims.

Mick reassures Audrey.
A mass murderer named Donovan Shephard is executed and Beth takes Audrey, a young woman with whom she greatly identifies, under her wing. Audrey’s parents had been the final victim’s of Shephard’s murder spree and now she is being harassed and threatened by Shephard’s supporters.
Beth watches Mick work.
Beth asks Mick to investigate and if possible, put a halt to Audrey’s tormentors. After an online search leads him to believe Audrey may be the target of an organized effort of stalking, he rushes to her rescue.
Mick takes down Audrey’s attacker.
Mick’s investigation takes him to the palatial home of a movie executive who plans to make a movie of Shephard’s life story. In the source material for the story, Mick finds evidence that Shephard may have turned vampire prior to his execution, allowing him to survive.
Beth is concerned for Mick as he goes to hunt Donovan Shephard.
Audrey and Beth to go visit the D.A. to discuss her harassment and soon afterwards, Mick finds the D.A. murdered. Convinced now that Shephard is indeed a vampire, Mick installs Beth and Audrey at his loft for safe-keeping while he goes on the hunt for Shephard. The chase leads from a church to the movie producer’s mansion and back home again…
Mick finds the body of the DA in the prison morgue.
Meanwhile, left to her own devices in Mick’s apartment, Beth’s journalistic instincts kick in, and she searches Mick’s files. She finds one labeled with her name, containing pictures of her from over the last 20 years. Armed with the knowledge that Mick indeed rescued her when she was a child, she confronts him on the rooftop at dawn…
Beth reads her file in Mick’s office.
Some observations:
*Mick doing “maintenance” removing bullet from left arm, perhaps where Leni shot him in “Fever?” It grosses me out that he doesn’t rinse that bullet off before dropping it in the jar, though.
*This is one of the “vampire mythology” problem episodes – for example, the priest vampire doesn’t smell Mick (he asks “who are you?” when the answer should be partially obvious) & newly turned vampire blood-lust can apparently be overcome with some preparation.
*Why did Donovan attack Jerry Drake, Audrey and Beth with a knife? Doesn’t that seem a little odd?
*Beth going through Mick’s files — regardless of Mick’s reactions — ok or not ok?

JK Parting Shots:
As many of you know, this is only my second time watching through the series. The first time through, up through episode 7, I was definitely enjoying it, finding it entertaining, but I couldn’t say for sure that I was a Moonlight fanatical fan (a.k.a. “Mooney”). This episode, though. This episode, coming after the intensity of “Fever,” after the emotion of “B.C.” and the suspense of “The Ringer,” then there was This Episode – and I feel like I got it, I finally understood. The clouds parted and the sun shone through and even though this probably isn’t one of the best episodes of Moonlight (tell me I’m wrong!) it’s definitely one of my favorites. Here are a few screencaps.

Audrey
She doesn’t know not to go home with strange women, answer unlisted phone calls or take showers while being stalked but regardless, she is a sweet, sympathetic and thankfully unquestioning girl. I thought the actress was just perfect in the role!
And finally, we get to the final scene on the rooftop, and what can you say about this scene, really? Alex & Sophia really nailed it, hit all the right emotional notes, and visually the scene itself is just poetically beautiful.
Beth has found her hero.
Mick struggles with the choices he’s made.
Beth expresses her thankfulness, Mick isn’t sure he deserves it.

Episode 8 AT LAST!!!!! I could have written your parting shot word for word, this is my absolute favourite episode of all even though it might not be the best – it just summed up everything that the show was supposed to be about, to me. So much love.
Observations:

Yup, totally, not least the priest vamp himself. Most churches I’ve ever been in are crucifixes-a-go-go.

Maybe because he’s newly turned? He got a kick out of killing and he’s spent years in jail, so maybe he’s making up for lost time? (That was a lovely thought. Not.)
*Beth going through Mick’s files — regardless of Mick’s reactions — ok or not ok?
Very not ok, but very ‘Beth’. She’s a reporter, what ya gonna do? 😉

Two tragic characters living a life that was laid out for them (not chosen by them), taking care of others while putting themselves last. Somewhat out of a sense of duty but mostly because at their basic level they are just really “good, honorable men” at heart. Protector of women and children and fiercely loyal to their male counterparts. Two men forced to put up a veneer of stoicism and strength to the outside world, when really it’s the strongest of the strong that are the most emotional and vulnerable…and when they allow us to catch a glimpse of that, it’s something you never forget.

There is no way around it, the ending scene was perfection. Perfectly written and acted with such perfection. Their words and their faaaaces spoke an entire episode of dialogue.
On first watch through I think it actually took me to episode 15 to become a hard core Mooney, but on this, my 4th rewatch, i’m amazed at how early on and how intesely emotional I get with some of these scenes.

6. The whole scene in the bathroom. This show did give good bathroom.

11. I love the moment where Mick manages not to look down the girl’s cleavage, but then she TOTALLY checks out his a*se. I felt sorry for her in general, really. So near, and yet so far.
12. In the DA’s office – if the ‘family’ had been responsible, would they not have TAKEN the knife? Bad joined-up thinking there.
13. Here’s another mythology one – do vampires not have fingerprints? Because Mick is pretty certain that Donovan’s body is not in the freezer before he even opens it, and then finds a body in there that’s obviously going to belong to someone else, which is going to need to be investigated…. if I were him, I think I would have worn gloves.
14. “Beware the bottles that say ‘Drink Me’” this ep had just the BEST lines, even if there was no Josef at all. Boooo!
15. Whenever Mick shows up somewhere (like the burned out building in Ep7) no-one ever questions or double-checks what he’s doing there, they just take his word for it. Is this down to vamp charisma, do we think?
16. “It’s been about 36 years since my last confession” – well, this is interesting. If he were going to lie he’d say it had been two weeks or something, so obviously he was going to confession long after he became a vamp. Poor self-hating Mick. *sniff*

14. Sad lack of Josef! I know! I didn’t realize it first time around because I was so “not getting” Josef but this time I really felt it, like — why doesn’t Mick go talk to Josef about this? Even if for no reason. It just felt odd coming after an ep that had both Josef & Coraline. Most of Ep 8 could have been put anywhere in the series, wouldn’t have mattered. Just a story. But that final scene gives it an important time & place & good focus on just Mick & Beth.

And there was an awful lot in the ep, I can’t think of anything that could have been cut out. It would have been fun if Josef had been at Mick’s when Donovan arrived though. I would have loved to see him be all ‘can’t we pay someone to do this?’ again.
16. I suppose it must do, otherwise the priest would have known he was a vamp and he did seem a bit surprised.

The last person put to death in Australia was in 1967 (a guy by the name of Ronald Ryan) and all states had abolished capital punishment by the 80s. The prison where Ryan was hanged has mostly been torn down and redeveloped into a residential area. You could pay me a million bucks and I would still not live on that haunted land!

I am not sure of the episode now (I think it is in Epi 1 – I’ll have to verify), but Josef said it….we live the day and age of fingerprints and DNA. We have to be careful…….
So in my opinion they do have fingerprints and even DNA and bloodtypes as well……..

Anyone who thinks Alex can’t emote needs to be tied to a chair and made to watch the last two minutes of this episode. Mick absolutely breaks my heart at the end – all that guilt and shame and devotion and horror and love fight for their rightful places on his face. And Beth tries so hard to make him understand that he’s not horrible. I go between wanting to hug him and make it all better, and wanting to shake him and tell him to GET it, already!
I did get kinda skeeved watching Mick cut his arm open and fish out that bullet, and more skeeved seeing that jar and knowing how many times he’d done it before.
Shephard with Mick’s phone made me feel like an idiot – I thought I was going to have to take a college course to learn how to use my smartphone and Shephard pulls Beth’s address out of Mick’s without a hitch.
Sophia is all kinds of gorgeous in this ep, and I chuckle every time I watch her pick up Mick’s shirt and smell it, because I would totally do that. She freaks out when she finds out Mick’s been following her around for 22 years, but she handles it with aplomb.
Ok or not ok for Beth to go through Mick’s files? Not. Ok. She invaded his privacy, even though she only went through her own file. Then again…Mick could have known Beth would snoop and should have locked the file cabinet. 🙂

Alex was amazing in this scene, really sold the emotion well, all the more challenging since he wasn’t making eye contact with the camera or Beth, so that’s all the more reflective of his overall talent to me — since so much of TV acting is in the eyes.
That jar of bullets. OK. He’s been a vampire for what 55ish years? How many stinking bullets were in that jar? That’s getting shot A LOT. Did he become a P.I. … in the 1960s? If he didn’t until the ’70s or ’80s that’s …. it’s a lot of lead, is all I’m saying.
Shephard with the smart phone — such a good point. The guy was in prison well before the smartphone… nay, CELL PHONE revolution of the early 2000s…. there’s no way he ever would have handled on let alone figured out how to open the contacts file & scroll to the right address. How did he know Mick’s name, anyway?

I also thought so, but this time around the time frame bugged me. She was 10 at the murder, this is 15 yrs later, that would make her 24yrs – she looks and sounds younger….but I looked it up, she was 23yrs when this was shot!
And how old was Donavon suppose to be? The actor was 35 then, minus 15yrs, would make him 20 at the time of his mass murder rampage. I thought maybe that is young for that kind of behaviour, but then again, a lot of these murdering sprees that hit the news in recent years have been by younger people…..

I think he was into the theatical stuff. Like Audrey said he likes to stage the scene. He was talking with the producer before he went homicidal…so he was kind of an actor and wanted to be dramatic…..

I enjoyed the plot, also, but as much as I want to see this episod repeatedly for the Mick/Beth interaction at the end, I want to see it for Donovan, too. I like the bad boys. And as always, I enjoyed Alex/Mick, his amazing acting, and his sexy chest hair. Reminds me, Alex needs to play more bad boys. I don’t know about anyone else, but I wanted Michael to win at the end of FEED. I still won’t watch the last scene after the gunshots–I choose to pretend he did win.

Yeah, Donovan was definitely a BAMF. He can stay on my hot list, though. I used to be like you, ESS. I didn’t like blonds, but I think that had something to do with how my first boyfriend screwed me over. When I got over that, back to liking any hair color. There’s just too many hot men out there to limit them by hair color anymore. I’m an equal opportunity ogler.
Although, me and my best friend always argue because I liked Axl Rose and she liked Vince Neil. So she always said blonds were better, and I always said redheads. Now she laughs because my first hero in my series is a blond. It just worked out that way.

-Shepherd was creepy to me. Not hot at all, too creepy. I thought they cast him really well because he totally weirded me out!!
-if Shepherd was already turned when they strapped him into the execution chair, why did he have a heartbeat on the monitor?
-it’s the bulging eyeball scene!! Shiny!!
-terrible wig on the wannabe Shepherd who breaks into Beth’s house.
-Mick is hot when he’s threatening people. Come to think about it, McG is hot when he’s threatening people. Hmm… I may have a problem…
-Mick tells Beth not to let Audrey go upstairs or into the office or through the grey door… what’s behind the grey door? Do we know and I’m forgetting?
-Others pointed this out too, but why couldn’t the vamp priest smell that Mick was a vamp? On second thought, maybe church insense blocks scent? And since Mick went so many years since his last confession, this means he was/is Catholic?
-the producers house = WANT
-I love that Beth smells Mick’s sweater when she goes in his office. LOVE!
-sniffing!! Where’s Spursy with the count?
-good lord, Mick can wear a pair of jeans.

The “St” in his surname can be some indication for this. We also do know that his parents were religious and took him to church every Sunday. And I think Steph also mentioned earlier that he was very specific in his wording of last being at confession 36 yrs ago.

Because ML Vamps do have a heartbeat IMO (there is also in Episode 10 an indication for this). I think they need their blood to move around in the body for different reasons……..

Obviously the easiest way for vamps to turn someone is to bite the jugular vein (kill them), and then drip blood into their mouth from their hand or arm, which we see the priest do to Shephard in the security tape. So Shephard was for sure a vampire by the time he got to the execution chamber. It’s how he either faked a heartbeat or faked his heartbeat stopping that we don’t really understand.

He was actually dead from the lethal injection, but then his system would recover as soon as he was unhooked from the drugs. Vamps do get injured (in this case his heart stopped because of what was done to it), but they recover. The injection would normally have been made up of at least 3 different substances. The one is lethal to the heart and stop it working directly (it is the substance used by Drs. when they want to stop the heart from beating during surgery)
Some of them work on the nervous system as well (paralyse the person in other words)……and according to me, ML vamps do have a working nervous system.
Oops, I just blew my own 2nd theory out of the water……
I wanted to say he could have used some special strong but small movement with his muscles, just to unhook the connections from the monitor….but if your nervous system is paralyses….then you can’t. 😆
Posted by FOYeur | July 17, 2012, 2:41 pmI think his heart probably did stop and he ‘died’ as a human. They do get hurt and some injuries take longer for them to bounce back from. Like when Mick is shot in the head, he’s out for a short while before his body can heal enough to bring him back. I’d say the more severe the injury the longer it takes for the body to heal, unlike a simple cut or gunshot wound to the forearm, which we’ve seen heal very quickly.
Having your heart and all your organs stop, may take a bit to heal.

Or La Cantatrice Chauve, but that’s only because our entire French class spent about six months saying “Tiens! Il est neuf heures!” whenever anyone asked what time it was, and I had to just look up where it came from because I couldn’t remember anything else about it.
Shamefully, I have not even read Les Misérables, even though I’ve seen the musical three times. I’m guessing that probably doesn’t count?
