The Shield which Rendered Her so Strong (Fleur de Lis)

The last we see of Morgan.

“A rogue does not laugh in the same way that an honest man does; a hypocrite does not shed the tears of a man of good faith. All falsehood is a mask; and however well made the mask may be, with a little attention we may always succeed in distinguishing it from the true face.”
― Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers

Mick realizes the truth.

The episode begins with a brutal, unexpected stabbing before we flash back to 24 hours in the past…

The slat of a chair back used as a makeshift stake.

Beth, having finally pieced together the mystery of her childhood kidnapping with Mick’s admission she had been taken by his ex-wife Coraline back in 1985, is now determined to clear up the matter once and for all. She focuses her attention on Morgan, the “dead ringer” for Coraline and vows to either exonerate Morgan, or reveal her to be Coraline. She recruits Mick to assist her.

Beth taunts Mick about Morgan.

“It is only the dead who do not return.”
― Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers

Mick considers his client’s requests.

Meanwhile, Mick takes the case of a middle-aged and wealthy man who has requested Mick track the movements of his much younger and very beautiful wife. The man asks Mick to provide proof that the woman either is, or is not, having an affair.

Mick watches Morgan order french fries and french wine.

Over lunch, Mick convinces Morgan to accept his apology for his behavior at the cemetery and work the case with him. Together, they track the movements of the wife, who appears to have met up with her lover at a public park.

Morgan and Mick work together on the investigation.

“Love is the most selfish of all the passions.”
― Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers

Morgan and Mick, about to share a kiss.

While watching the couple in an private moment at a hotel, Mick and Morgan kiss, a fact which Mick is eager to hide from Beth. Morgan continues to make comments and allusions that make Mick feel uncomfortable and act awkwardly.

Beth investigates the meaning of the Fleur de Lis.

Conducting her own investigation, Beth has looked through Morgan’s apartment and found photos of Mick from the 1950s. Evidence in hand, she visits Josef who convinces Beth that if Morgan is indeed Coraline, she must be a vampire, as there is absolutely no way to “cure” one’s vampire state.

Josef consults with Beth.

Josef also provides Beth with the address of Coraline’s 1950s “party house” where Mick worked as a musician. Inside that house, Beth finds the proof she is looking for as she realizes that Morgan is indeed Coraline, as her repressed memories return.

Beth investigates at Coraline’s house.

“Do you take me for a weak woman? When I am insulted I do not feel ill – I avenge myself.”
― Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers

Mick gazes upon Morgan after saving her life.

Mick and Morgan, having narrowly escaped the life-threatening dangers of solving their own mystery, return to Mick’s loft where, in an intimate moment, they share more kisses and Mick realizes Morgan is indeed Coraline, who has found a way to become human.

Mick tries to explain to Beth.

Beth arrives, and taking in the scene, assumes Mick and Coraline have had sex. Enraged by Coraline’s duplicity and seeing a chance to take her personal safety into her own hands, Beth strikes out, with devastating and unexpected consequences…

Beth sees Coraline coming down the stairs, wearing Mick’s shirt.

“My God is myself; and whoever will assist in my revenge!”
― Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers

Beth expresses no regrets.

“…He has lifted the corner of her mask–
that shield with which she covered herself and which rendered her so strong.”
― Alexandre Dumas, The Three Musketeers

Notes:
A) So I guess after she got to thinking about it Beth *was* sort of pissed at Mick after learning she’d been kidnapped by his ex 20 years ago. Those comments she was making in the car had some not-so-veiled hostility and more than a touch of passive-aggressiveness (actually kind of aggressive-aggressive, tbh).
B) Morgan: I used to date a lot of musicians… and then, I’ve never been ‘almost killed’… (oh that’s SO LOW!)
C) We have a date for the party!! The picture of Mick was labeled 1952 – And since we know the wedding was also in 1952… “whirlwind romance” it is!

Beth finds a picture of Mick in Morgan’s apartment ~ The date on the picture ~ From “Dr. Feelgood” where Mick flashes back to his honeymoon.

D) This moment:

Morgan: Maybe we could make it a threesome? Mick: ………….. Beth: Die in a fire Morgan!
…OK, maybe Beth just said that with her eyes…

E) So cute, Beth & Josef’s little friendship.

Beth gets the low-down on Mick & Coraline from Josef.

F) Feel bad for Mick in this ep, Morgan is making him wonder why he bothered to get out of the freezer this morning, and Beth’s mad & she’s the one who asked him to keep Morgan distracted in the first place! So we end with poor Mick’s thinkyface…

He’s not old-fashioned…

  1. Moonlight Monday! Thank YOU for taking the time to recap with lovely pics of chest hair! And for providing us a forum in which to discuss aforementioned chest hair. 🙂

  2. LOVE the Three Musketeers quotes. Did not see that coming at all! And great screencaps – especially Mick’s thinkyface and the Josef one. (We’re getting shirtless Josef soon, aren’t we?)

    Notes:

    1. “Does this seem healthy to you?” – it’s quite possible that Alex is saying this to Diana RIGHT NOW!!!

    2. Pervy Mick! Ha! I feel better about #1 now.

    3. This guy is a sleeeeeaze. I would have loved to see his attempt at ‘consequences’.

    4. I want what Coraline’s having, but with sauce.

    5. I like this whole apology scene very much. Good for you, CBS.

    6. Morgan’s camera is doing a really good impression of The FOY here.

    7. Mick and Coraline are the worst covert surveillance operatives EVER. It’s a good thing Mick doesn’t do this for a living. Oh wait…

    8. When Mick says ‘Yeah, I don’t think we should do that’, he says the entire line in an Australian accent. Long day, Alex?

    9. I totally thought those pills were going to be bubble mix. I need more adult company, obvi.

    10. “Hurry up or I’m going to start without you.” This line made me laugh, even though it made absolutely NO sense.

    11. The kiss *fans self*. These two had crazy hot chemistry.

    12. It’s a shame Morgan’s an evil witch because I really like her. “It was like pay-per-view, but with more hair.” Genius.

    13. …except the whole ‘looking like the ex and all’. Crikey, if someone turned up who looked like any of my exes, I would run screaming in the other direction.

    14. Josef! I missed you.

    15. I’ve thought this before, that to Coraline, kidnapping Beth was not really much different to a human getting a puppy – taking her from her home and her family at a very young age, making a comfortable space for her in her new home…. Coraline’s not human and doesn’t really think of humans as being anything like her, so she wouldn’t consider Beth’s feelings at all beyond thinking that she would settle into her new life in time. She didn’t treat Beth badly, it was only when Mick wasn’t as delighted as she thought he’d be that it went wrong.

    16. Another fabulous bathroom scene. So much awesomeness here – Mick’s relief that he didn’t really kill her, moving straight to ‘how have you done this’ without ever going through ‘let’s get back together’. Although hmmm… not sure what would have happened if Beth hadn’t arrived right then.

    17. I’m not really sure what to think about the staking incident. Obviously, Coraline is human now – but she’s still the same person she was before, and therefore still completely psychotic. I suppose it depends on how much of Beth’s actions were motivated by fear/wanting to protect herself (and Mick, after what Josef said) and just wanting revenge.

I liked this episode very much – it moved the story on a lot after Episode 8 set it all up nicely, and it had a lot of great lines and too many lovely little moments to list them all (plus some other *moments* that I haven’t quite recovered from yet, mostly shower-related). I’m glad in a way that I watched these so quickly the first time around, because I can’t really remember what happens after this, so it’s like watching for the first time all over again. Result!

Why whatever do you mean Alicia???????? I wonder is the size of the box has intriqued them?????
I wish I was a fly on the wall when that gets opened.

    • Alicia, I really feel you in everything you said on this episode…meaning most of it is exactly my thoughts…
      5. I like this whole apology scene very much. Good for you, CBS
This was such a wonderful way of getting clarity between these two, and Coraline’s “murder”
      8. When Mick says ‘Yeah, I don’t think we should do that’, he says the entire line in an Australian accent. Long day, Alex?
The accent never really bothers me…but this time it also did….
12 “It was like pay-per-view, but with more hair.” Genius.
One of the funniest lines in the series…..
16.Although hmmm… not sure what would have happened if Beth hadn’t arrived right then.
I am watching every time, thinking, maybe Beth won’t knock this time….
      17. I’m not really sure what to think about the staking incident.
Beth definitely decided to do something at the house already…..otherwise, why break the chair. But like you said was it revenge, or protecting herself?

    • I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing that you didn’t suspect Three Musketeers. I feel it was kind of the “anvil dropping on my head” choice, I’m not 100% proud of it, even though I think it ended up working very well with my write up & pictures. That novel man, no one thinks about just how old it is and they’re still making movies of that story, with those characters. Dumas is just SPECIAL (as my many times read paperback of Count of Monte Cristo will attest to). Also — It occurs to me that atplenkov must have gone to the “Alexandre Dumas School of Writing Female Characters.” Curriculum goes like this: Are they evil? EXCELLENT. Are they good? OH SH/T.

      • It’s a good thing! With this ep’s themes of fidelity (Sleazeball/Murderous Wife, Mick/Coraline – because if she’s not dead then technically they’re still married – and the ongoing Mick/Beth/Josh what-are-we-even-calling-this) and disappointment in marriage (because neither Mick nor Coraline got exactly what they bargained for, and neither did Sleazeball for that matter, although it’s hard to feel sorry for him), I was expecting Madame Bovary. Which I think out-anvils The Three Musketeers by some way.

I love your literary interludes because they don’t seem in any way related to the episodes *until* you quote them. I would never watch this ep and think ‘wow, this really reminds me of The Three Musketeers’, but the quotes you’ve used are so perfect, and they sum up the themes of the episodes so well. Perfect.

Although, I have to confess that I’m not really familiar with Dumas except through film adaptations. *sigh* another one or two to add to the reading list….

        • Alicia, you are so right yet again…..
“but the quotes you’ve used are so perfect, and they sum up the themes of the episodes so well. Perfect.”
I have been amazed with it in every episode thus far.
And Steph I don’t know why you thought this would be less of a literary work than any of the orthers….you truly have a gift with it!!

          Posted by FOYeur | July 23, 2012, 2:24 pm
          • Because the Three Musketeers is the 17th Century Equivalent of a cheezy fluffy pop culture mainstream novel – the kind of paperback you’d find in an airport gift shop. Only its insane popularity over the last hundred years has people thinking it’s anything close to “literature.” 😉 Just because it’s old.

But thank you for your kind words, that really means a lot to me. You all are so great & I love talking about this show & it’s themes with you all! 😀

            • *blinks* <<< ok, I've seen the Three Musketeers in many forms but never read it. I feel very uneducated when I listed to you and Alicia talk. LOL! I guess I never read many classics, (that I wasn't forced to read). I think I just started reading suspense/mystery novels as soon as I got into reading and stuck with those. I read your posts with the enthusiasm that maybe I might learn something. 🙂

              • I’ve never read it either! There are a lot of classics that I’ve never read, I like getting ideas for what to read too (The Count of Monte Cristo is going to be next up, I think, I loved the Jim Cav-whateverhisnameis film). There are some classics that I like, but I’m more of a mediaeval history or sci-fi/fantasy girl myself (but not usually at the same time). A lot of classics, I just don’t see what the fuss is about, really.

Ess, it is the same for me (I can actually block your whole post and copy it)….
My whole family are so good with language, poetry and literature….by the time it got to me there was nothing left. But I do have a deep appreciation for its beauty and Steph uses it in such a beautiful manner, it just enchances something we already love……

            • I’m half way through Three Musketeers…..

        • Oh God, Bovary. By the time I was done with that book I wanted to scoop my eyeballs out with spoons I HATED THEM ALL… SO MUCH. LOL, I should totally re-read it now, though, it’s been at least 10 years since I read it last. And things change. 🙂

The ever curious question of just what constitutes a vampire divorce rears its ugly head. Because Mick & Coraline had a human marriage (at least human wedding ceremony). Is Coraline his “ex” just cause he considered their relationship over? Or did he not call her his “Ex” until he thought she was dead? Hard to tell with the flashbacks done the way they are.

          Posted by SJ2 (Junk Kicker) | July 23, 2012, 2:46 pm
          • Hmmm… sometimes they don’t. I’m reading Mansfield Park for the first time since being forced to sit through it at school, in the hope that the characters aren’t as vacuous, selfish and irritating as I thought they were when I was fourteen, and guess what? They are.

Vampire divorces – who knows? I’m not too clear on vampire marriages either. Does creating a vampire as a partner for yourself constitute a marriage? Mick, being the old-fashioned flower that he is, would have considered their marriage vows binding even though neither of them were human anymore, but that part wouldn’t have meant anything to Coraline, it was turning him that was the important thing to her… it’s a mess. I have no idea.

I think Mick probably didn’t think of her as his ex until he thought she was dead, because Josef said that he kept going back to her until she kidnapped Beth and he killed her (but not really), at which point she was his ‘ex’-wife in a very literal way (oh for the love of God, now I have the Monty Python parrot scene in my head. I shouldn’t comment this early in the morning).

            Posted by Alicia | July 23, 2012, 11:14 pm

This didn’t really stand out to me. In fact I had to go back and find it. I think we need another Aussie’s opinion…… or am I just used to hearing my own accent so it doesn’t sound off to me???

  3. Scene of Mick and Coraline in shower not long enough, loved the smoldering looks Alex gave as Mick in this episode.

  4. Mick’s hair in his thinky face picture looks really good……in 1992.
    I miss Mick…..is that weird? I really liked him….well 2007 Mick, 1952 Mick was kinda a tool.

Posted by LaHagela (The Tinkler) | July 23, 2012, 6:37 am
    • Mick’s (dry) hair was failrly terrible in this episode in my opinion. That’s one reason I posted that last screen cap, I was thinking “oh, not so bad there!” The stylist for this show, I wonder what they were on sometimes. But then I wonder, “was there a story behind it?” Like the jewlery & the rando stuff in the apartment. Like, later on in the series would Beth have asked “what’s with the hair?”

      Posted by SJ2 (Junk Kicker) | July 23, 2012, 1:11 pm
      • His hair looks good! it’s just really dated.
Can’t you just picture that? Beth running her fingers threw his hair…and looking at him all innocently and saying “whats up with this coif anyway?”

Posted by LaHagela (The Tinkler) | July 23, 2012, 3:29 pm
    • 1952 Mick was a tool because of Coraline…. Nothing indicated he was a tool before she started fking with his head.

  5. You quoted Dumas. I love you so much right now.

Back in the day, I found myself in the minority as I LIKED the eps with Morgan/Coraline in them. Shannyn GLOWED as Coraline, and made the eps she was in absolutely stellar. I think I’m also in the minority, as I really enjoyed Beth’s VO this ep.

The first time I watched Moonlight, I found the shift between “I found my guardian angel” Beth at the end of 8, and “Die, vampire bitch, die!!” Beth in this ep a little jarring, but having the luxury of hindsight, I can see now how it actually did flow very well. Beth’s had time to think and she starts putting the pieces together…and yeah, I also would have been homicidal to know my vampire not-quite-boyfriend’s wife is not only shining him on, but is doing a pretty good job of it – AND was the one that kidnapped me when I was four.

FANTASTIC chemistry between Mick and Coraline, and I say that as a total Beth girl. Poor Mick – totally between a rock and a hard place.

I chuckle every time Beth almost gets caught at Morgan’s…and I wonder if she thinks that maybe wanting to be with a guy that can tell where she is just by sniffing is a good idea.

Mick’s client was a galactic douchebag – I can see why his wife cheated on him with his son. Creepy, yes. Understandable…also yes.

Mick was just all kinds of gorgeous in this ep, but I have to admit – my favorite scene was Beth going to Josef. She knows where to go to get answers, and Josef’s more than willing to provide them. Josef and Beth have one thing in common – they both love Mick.

Mick. Coraline. Shower. That look on his face. #Ijustcanteven

This one ranks right up as one of my Moonlight faves.

    • *Dumas Fangirl High Five* It was UNAVOIDABLE. 😀

SUCH an interesting choice to have Beth do the v/o this episode. It would have been (why do I keep doing this to myself/us?) cool to see if there had been other episodes in the future that had Beth v/o and what they all had in common.

Mick’s client makes me never want to be anyone’s trophy wife. Ugh, what a horrible human being. And he was the GOOD GUY!

Oh good point, I never thought about “favorite scene” in this ep but Beth & Josef is right up there for sure!! It was just *perfect.* Love those two!!!

  6. My notes:
    1. Beth is narrating…interesting but I’d prefer Mick pls. Thanks.
    2. Mick why are you opening the door wet and half dressed? Oh…
    3. Coraline comes down the stairs like she just went shopping in Bang. C0ck. Lying biatch.
    4. I totally want to high five Beth for staking Coraline! Go BETH!!
    5. In the car, B – she’s a real exibitionist (Mick averts his eyes) B – HUH got YOUR attention! Poor Mick. Dude, there is no winning here. Just go home. LOL!
    6. M- “get down!!” I would have totally put my head in his lap. Beth, what a wasted opportunity. On behalf of womankind, I am smacking you in the head.
    7. I really hate Coraline with the heat of a thousand suns…or one red hot fleur de lis branding iron during this episode. It’s so obvious the way she has manipulated Mick over the years and really gets off on it. She gives women (and vampires) a bad name. 😉 Don’t abuse my Mick. Them’s fighting words…
    8. M – “ANYBODY is capable of murder…. (eep) given the right circumstances.” – dear Mick…let me hold you..
    9. When that secretary dude tries to grab the envelope from Mick’s hands..>>LMAOOOOO!!
    10. Yes, Mick. You ARE old fashioned….and it’s one of your best quailities. 🙂
    11. Mick, Coraline & the shower. Hot.

      10. Agreed!!!!!!! Mick didn’t have all the years of Josef, Coraline, Lola to be able to kind of release the trappings of his era… and kind of “trancend” all that time. He’s still a man of the 20th/21st Century.

^^THIS. I can see why that made Beth all stabby.

        • Well, to be fair, Beth was pretty stabby in Coraline’s basement, drove across town, walked up to Mick’s apartment with the stake in her sleeve, then saw Coraline and THEN got ACTUALLY STABBY. She was stabby with malice aforethought is what I’m saying. Coraline just made it so we’re all ok with how premeditated it was, made it seem like an emotional reaction in the heat of the moment when really not so much.

          Posted by SJ2 (Junk Kicker) | July 24, 2012, 12:32 pm
      • 3. Never was a big Coraline fan but the snarky ‘Hi Beth’ as she sauntered down the stairs in Mick’s shirt was too much. I love that Beth went all BAMF on her with a wooden stake. You go girl!

Speaking of the stake, wasn’t it a part of the chair from the room Coraline kept Beth in as a girl? Anyone else think it’s odd that the fancy glass house sat undisturbed all these years? Yeah, I know, it’s a show. It doesn’t all have to make sense.

        McG in a shower…yes please.

        Posted by JDD | July 23, 2012, 3:19 pm
        • Yeah I did think it was wierd about the house being undisturbed. Well, undisturbed somewhat. We know she still lived there and kept some of her stuff there. Maybe she just covered everything up when she moved into her other apartment when she decided to start stringing Mick along again. Did I mention she’s a biatch??

    • Like in that commercial!! I love that. Also don’t feel bad you haven’t spent time reading over long 17th century French adventure novels. There are a lot of better things one can do with their time!! Like watch the movie versions. I haven’t seen the latest one with Orlando Bloom & Milla Jojovich which I heard was a right hot mess but looks FABULOUS while being so. 😉

  8. For the record, Coraline & Mick had mad chemistry, but that’s the bad part too. It wasn’t chemistry so much as a madness, like Josef described it. She made the storyline interesting and definitely kicked the show in the pants when it needed it. I still hate Coraline though. I guess that means she did her job. 😉

    Posted by ESS @H50BAMF | July 23, 2012, 3:48 pm
    • Ok, I wanna backtrack a little. As for an actual relationship, I’ll grant you that being with Beth is better in that healthy way. For heat, and agreed it was written to be that way, it was seeing him with Coraline, Or I just want to BE her when she starts making out with Mick. I guess blondes of any variety don’t interest me. No offense to any of you blondes here though. Other non-fucup blondes. Morgan/Coraline does a good job in the show, for some reason I don’t hate her though. Usually everything Ess writes, I agree with. #itsaconfusingtime. I think she def. loved Mick in whatever way she was capable of…crazy or not. Spurschick writes it much better several paragraphs below.
As to the poor photography by Morgan, I figure that was just a cover story to wedge her way in between Mick and Beth.
As to the clients, they were all nasty. The client himself had a bad ‘tude toward the wife. The wife is sleeping with the son. The son is betraying his dad. They’re pretty much all trying to kill each other. They deserve each other.

  9. For the record, I read The Three Musketeers so many time as a kid that my parents had to buy me a second copy because I had completely worn the first one out. Dumas high five, low five and fist bump… with and without explosion.

My random thoughts on episode love potion #9, a.k.a. one of my, if not my, favorite ep:
    – I would be intimidated by a door that I had to slap instead of knock.
    – Chest. Hair. My fingers are angry that they can’t touch it.
    – Oooooooh, bad hair though. Wet Mooney hair = bad.
    – Half naked chick in a window? Of course that got his attention! Geez, Beth!
    – Mick literally looks like he has tucked himself in the smallest corner of that passenger seat. Just didn’t pay to be a guy that day.
    – In the car, Beth wanted to know for sure if it was Coraline. What was she planning to do once she found out?
    – Hair looks good in the office!
    – Beth and her blood drop necklaces.
    – Coraline was clearly branded before she was turned. A point that I will revisit in the future.
    – Unfortunately, Show picked an actress that,IMO, had more chemistry with Alex than Sophia did. Hence, I’m TeamCoraline.
    – Oh please… like nobody noticed Mick running around with the phallic microphone.
    – Beth sure is good at snooping through other people’s sh/t.
    – The elevator. I wouldn’t have had that kind of willpower. TeamSuckFaceInTheElevator.
    – How did they know exactly what room the wife and son were in so that they could get the perfect room across the street? Yeah, I know. It’s TV. I’ll shut up now.
    – You’d think he would have known it was Coraline after they kissed. Which, btw, sigh.
    – Um… Mick and Josef are wearing the same striped shirt.
    – How did the son break into the fortress is that is Mick’s apartment?
    – Speaking of breaking in… there goes Beth. Do vampires not believe in house alarms?!
    – That kid’s room looks amazing spotless for being vacant all these years.
    – Okay… so…. shower scene. This might possible be THE reason that this is my fave ep.

Sniff count: 1 (I seem to remember a whole lot more sniffing going on on this series, but the last few eps have been lame in that department)

Line of the ep: “Mick and Coraline’s relationship was one of those terrifying, self-destructive freak shows that YOU SPEND YOUR WHOLE LIFE SEARCHING FOR knowing that it can only end in one or both of you dead.”

I heart Josef harder than hard.

    • “Unfortunately, Show picked an actress that,IMO, had more chemistry with Alex than Sophia did. Hence, I’m TeamCoraline.” – I don’t know that she had more chemistry…I think it’s that the role as written was supposed to be more hot and heavy where the role of Beth wasn’t supposed to be hot and heavy, it was supposed to be built up over time. I think it’s more in the roles because when Coraline wasn’t being s.xy she was a total wet teabag IMHO. The Mick/Coraline dynamic wasn’t supposed to be about anything other than craziness. So i guess she had more s.xual chemistry….but chemistry takes many forms and when they were doing anything other than eyex.ing each other it was just a big ‘ole yawn.

I think I just don’t like my hero reduced to a spineless, shell of a man being led around like a puppy on a leash and Coraline worked him over til he didn’t know which way was up. That’s not healthy. That’s not entertainment to me. That is most definitely NOT the Mick I like. With Beth he can maintain his masculinity while being s.xy. #TeamStabCoralineWithYourMind

I’m also not totally TeamBeth either. She annoyed the hell out of me at times. I think I liked their dynamic better because at least with Beth/Mick they had a friendship, partnership at the same time and that’s what I enjoyed. I’m not even sure how much I would’ve liked show in S2 after Mick/Beth “got together”. Guess I’ll never know. FU CBS!!

      • YES! Everything ESS just said re: Coraline & Beth….ACA!

      • Coraline worked him over til he didn’t know which way was up. That’s not healthy

I want to mention my theory about this yet again….the vampires have some special allure that the humans stuggle to resist. One of the reasons a Vamp wants to make sure about the humans “feelings” towards them. Kind of like a rich or famous person that do not know if the other person are with them for the money or fame OR if they really love them. (My theory why Mick never wanted to take “advantage” of Beth)

        Posted by FOYeur | July 24, 2012, 8:16 am
        • So Mick, as a human couldn’t resist Coraline’s advances (manipulations) if he wanted to. He was a spineless shell of a man by good reason. Then he resisted Beth because he didn’t want her to be that way towards him (he knew how it felt??). Good theory. I like this theory.

          Posted by ESS @H50BAMF | July 24, 2012, 11:53 am
      • I guess I always thought, based on things that Coraline says later, that she really did love Mick. She didn’t exactly grow up in a Leave It To Beaver family, (sorry if that’s a spoiler) but who’s to say that she wasn’t less of a psycho before she was turned. Walking alone at her party told me that she was relatively a lonely person. I think she saw qualities in Mick that she probably wished she had more of. She could have married anyone, but she chose him. And vice versa. Yeah, she was his drug of choice, but I don’t think he would have made that kind of commitment without there being more to the relationship. Had she not turned him, who knows what the marriage would have been like. Granted, turning him was a dealbreaker, but I feel for her that she knew it was the only way that they could be together. She didn’t do it with evil intentions… she truly thought she was giving him a wonderful gift of immortality. When he bailed on her, she went to even more desperate measures by kidnapping Beth to give Mick the family that she knew she could never give him otherwise. As Josef said, it’s not unlike human relationships where couples think that having children will fix what is already broken. Bottom line is… I never got the impression that Coraline ever did anything to intentionally hurt Mick. All she wanted was to live with him forever and make him happy. Unfortunately, her methods were beyond extreme.

Speaking of unhealthy, I have a strong aversion to Beth coming on to Mick while she’s still with Josh. I know that she has a bond with Mick because of what happened to her as a child, but that’s no excuse and I definitely don’t like how Mick also seems to be ignoring the face that Josh is still in the picture. Just something I thought was weird from a writing standpoint and not sure why Show chose to go in this direction instead of just making Beth available from the start.

        Posted by spurschick | July 24, 2012, 11:09 am
        • I love everything about this comment!!!! I think it’s probably a good perspective to try & seperate Coraline’s personality from the lenghts to which she would go to attract/keep Mick.

The Beth/Josh stuff… yeah. I wish Show had longer to explore all the implications of everything it set up. I guess maybe if Mick had had a girlfriend when Coraline swooped into his life, he might be a little more aware? Beth herself refers to “The Mick St John Charm” as if it’s a thing at the start of the ep – and I’m not sure “charming” is the first word I’d use to describe Mick — unless of course he was inadvertantly oozing his vampire allure all over me at the time, making me forget I had a boyfriend, etc etc etc.

          Posted by SJ2 (Junk Kicker) | July 24, 2012, 12:15 pm
        • I see what you’re saying. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely feel like they loved each other. Just not in a healthy way. Coraline dropped her dress for him the first night they met…she didn’t exactly wait around to fall in love with his mind. Her being with that other guy when she had invited Mick over was to fk with his head and see how far he’d go to be with her. That’s not real love. That’s lust.

She didn’t have a good childhood and obvi led a lonely vamp life. If she really thought she was giving him a ‘gift’, she’d have been honest and told him/asked him. Like Josef was with Sarah. I don’t think she had evil intentions or was trying to hurt him…but bottom line, it was really all about her (up to this point) no matter how much she tried to make it seem like she was just trying to please Mick. Coraline was satisfying Coraline.

I’ve never thought Mick was ignoring that Josh was around. He never went after her and never encouraged her. It did bother me that she was sometimes all over Mick in a sense and then at times not, completely with Josh. But maybe Foyeur is onto something with the vamp appeal. maybe between the event when she was a child and the curse of the vampire charm, she really was one torn little puppy. Torn between her love for her boyfriend and between the attraction for this new, exciting person that’s entered her life not only as a friend/coworker but also as a hero, having saved her life as well as others. Except for the supernatural element, that’s real life. I kinda get that. Her intent wasn’t to hurt anyone either.

          • “Her being with that other guy when she invited Mick over…”. I’m 99.9% sure that “other guy” is Josef..I’ve replayed and paused that scene several times to be sure. He has long sideburns and his hair is slicked back but pretty sure that is him…I guess he “knew” coraline better than he let on.

              • Hey, no problem…after your response I did go back and look again and again…just in case…still fairly sure it is Josef …. and it would make sense…afterall didn’t Josef say to Mick that he’d known Coraline for more than a century….. he also told Beth “that Coraline was a lot of things to a lot of people, mostly men”…too bad there is no way to be certain it is Josef in that scene… but wow…wouldn’t that have been a great storyline – Josef having carnal knowledge of Mick’s wife!!! FU CBS

                Posted by canadagirl66 | July 30, 2012, 10:45 pm
                • Not so sure about the canal knowledge. I would want to believe that they were just friends. They definitely wanted to keep that storyline open for later use…..Coraline & Josef, friends or lovers?!

The orginal pilot actually showed that Josef knew Coraline was still alive – that is even worse for the Mick/Josef friendship!! (Truly glad they dropped that storyline)

What is interesting to me is that this happened before the Sarah part of Josef’s life (At least 2-3 years prior)

                  Posted by FOYeur | July 30, 2012, 11:17 pm
                  • You’re right…Coraline and Josef could have been ‘just friends’ ..afterall Coraline introduced Mick and Josef didn’t she? Do we know what year Mick and Josef met and became friends? I sooo wish their relationship could have been explored more…I’ll say it again…fu cbs!!!

                    Posted by canadagirl66 | July 30, 2012, 11:34 pm
                    • They never did say -she just said that she introduced them and what they thought of each other.
Maybe only after Josef moved from NY to LA (after 1955).
Don’t think Mick met many of her Vampire friends before the wedding……might have been a certain giveaway to her “lifestyle”.

Trevor Manson talked about those many options of exploring their backgrounds (especially Josef)….so many years and historical events to play with!!

        • I think you have captured the essence of Coraline rather well here…..
Think the long past without real love and companionship and finding it with Mick made her (and Mick) temporarily insane during their relationship!!
In the end if Mick really loved her, he might have agreed to be turned….

          – Speaking of unhealthy, I have a strong aversion to Beth coming on to Mick while she’s still with Josh.

In Beth’s defense, yet again: http://stephaniejane2.wordpress.com/2012/07/23/fleur-de-lis/#comment-2597
I really wished the explored this allure the Vampires have more (Beth did touch on the subject a bit when she took the drug in BC), then people would have understood it better

          – and I definitely don’t like how Mick also seems to be ignoring the face that Josh is still in the picture….

I don’t think Mick ever ignored it….he always kept his distance (well apart from kissing her back that first time, but he didn’t do it with much vigour…he just didn’t pull away…if he wanted to he could have really had a go at it many times, but he didn’t)

    • To me, the most terrible plot hole of this ep is the son breaking into Mick’s apartment/office. All that security is for what then? Staring at Beth when she’s standing in the hallway? And anyway, the baddies— How did they know?? where mick’s office was, that he was following them & that he had evidence?

  10. I managed to be on all 3 sides. I totally get that Beth would want to stab Coraline, of course and that screen cap that shows no remorse, good one. So smug when she was strolling down the stairs! Yet Beth sent them out together knows their potential history so she needs to lighten the f/ck up when they hit it off so well.
We all would feel the same as Coraline wanting to get Mick back no matter what it takes. Sure her methods are a little extreme, but their chemistry!! I agree that if Beth had not shown up for a while longer the shower scene could have been *extended*. (that’s not the only thing that would have been extended) They are great together and that shower scene beats Beth’s shower scene. #TeamCoraline.
But while each is singularly motivated, could Mick be more conflicted?
How he feels about thinking he killed someone and finding out he did not, and she is backmand still wants him as much as ever. Knowing it is her, yet not fully knowing with confirmation that he is right. His growing feelings for Beth but pulling her back so hard to get her off Coraline!
Yep, sitting in that car with Beth, just stare at your shoes man, you can’t win this.
Yes to hearing the Aussie accent.
    yes to Josef
Yes they are worse at undercover work than LoHo The shot putter is at running up steps (still laughing on that one)

Only original thought….since humans grow up and older, and vamps know this , especially ones born in the 1600’s as they have been around a while, did Coraline not stop to think Beth would grow up? Or was she planning on “turning” Beth at that age and having a ‘child’ forever? Because I can tell you that eventually you need those kids to grow up and start having a little independence. Ahem. Sorry personal rant. Alicia…counting the years yet?
As to sucking face in the elevator, yes please.

    Thanks SJ…

    • “just stare at your shoes man, you can’t win this.”

      So true!! Poor Mick.

I wondered that about Beth growing up as well – I thought maybe Coraline was planning to wait until she’d grown up and then turn her (does anyone else think it’s odd that Beth surname is Turner?).

(Counting the years? Oh hell yes. Only sixteen still to go.)

    • CVC, I also just loved your comments….for me also easy to be in any ones shoes here and feeling sorry for them all.

      “could Mick be more conflicted?”
I think Josef said it best….”when it comes to Coraline, Mick doesn’t think with is big head”

“His growing feelings for Beth but pulling her back so hard to get her off Coraline!”
I think at this stage, getting a cure was still his “biggest” love….and that’s why he is cross with Beth, because if Coraline dies, he will loose it forever!

“Or was she planning on “turning” Beth at that age and having a ‘child’ forever?”
A mistery we will never have the anser to, I think!

      Posted by FOYeur | July 24, 2012, 3:16 am
      • “I think at this stage, getting a cure was still his “biggest” love” – absolutely! His initial thought in the shower scene was definitely that Coraline was back and he started thinking with his little head…but then the big head had a thought and he was like, “You found a cure!” and I think she was taken a bit aback that she was there for him and in the heat of ‘passion’ he wants to talk about a cure? *heh*

  11. 1) “Just turn on the Mick St John charm, what girl could resist?”
No girl….except Sheila, but we don’t count her….cause she’s odd. Hi Sheila, love you.

    2) Mick: “She’s not your employee, she’s your wife.”
    Douchelord: “Principles the same.”
Only topped by; “I own her Mr St. John. That is all you need to know.”

    3) Beth goes through Morgan’s photos and Morgan isn’t very creative for a photographer. That last one, I’m pretty sure is Notre Dame and everyone takes that same shot of the windows…

    4) Mick: “Haggins wife is having an affair with his son, his step son.”
    Morgan: “That’s kinky.”
No Morgan that’s a little too Woody Allen for me.

    6) Mick when he talks to Beth at Buzzwire, “maybe I’ll see you when you get back.” He’s pretty adorkable in this scene.

    6) Josef: “When it comes Coraline Mick doesn’t think with his big head.” It’s lucky I wasn’t drinking my tea right this moment or else my laptop would be wearing it.

    7) Josef knew Coraline when Lincoln was President. So cool…well just that Josef was alive when Lincoln was president. Abe is totes the man. And evidently a vampire hunter, stay away from him Joseiiifff!

    8) The room Coraline created for Beth is my worst nightmare….with the flowers, dolls, and the pink EVERYTHING.

    9) “And they say Jordan had air.” Ughhhhhhhhhhhh.

    10) Poor Mick at the end, he so desperately wants to become human. 😦

  12. Things that really caught my attention with this rewatch.
Mick totally gave up on his music.
I wonder why? Was it Coraline?

Mrs Haggins was really not a good person – She did not only plan to kill her husband for money and power, she also “killed” Mick in cold blood (she shot him in the head)

    Posted by FOYeur | July 24, 2012, 8:31 am
    • “Mick totally gave up on his music.” – sad for 2 reasons.
      1) Sad Mick didn’t continue..I mean after 50 yrs he’d have been damn good!
      2) we could’ve gotten a chance to really see/hear Alex play guitar. 😉 #ulteriormotive

      • He definitely kept up on his reading, all those books. And he works out. So he’s not completely free of hobbies, but maybe he got bored with music? I’m just trying to think of a reason other than “Coraline” but there’s nothing as good as blaming it on her! 😆 Because if I had all that time, I’d learn a few languages, play a few instruments, read all those books, travel…. yeah I would!!

        • I was always a bit confused on the “working out” part. Is he working out to stay fit? Do vampire muscles go away if you don’t work out? Clearly he’s not doing it for a healthy heart. Aren’t vamps naturally strong? Or is this just one of those things that there is no reason behind other than giving the female fans something to look at.
