Fated to Pretend, Part One: The Ticking Crocodile

A happily human Mick meets Beth on the beach for a picnic lunch where – after some friendly conversation about his first week being human again – she admits she never should have asked Mick to turn Josh into a vampire. She also makes a revelation — if Josh had proposed, she would not have accepted. She strongly hints to Mick that she’s ready to begin a relationship with him – if he’s willing to do something about it. Mick instead goes and talks it over with Josef, who tells him the exact same thing Beth did: Human or not, Mick needs to make his move.
Beth, home from the beach, takes a call from her boss Maureen, who wants her in the office to work on a hot news story. Beth goes back out — and finds Maureen dead of a gunshot wound. Ben Talbot from the District Attorney’s office is on the scene conducting an interview with Beth when Mick arrives. Against Talbot’s orders, Mick and Beth decide to investigate Maureen’s murder. They meet up with Guillermo who tells them that Maureen was either killed by (or near) a vampire. At Maureen’s house they find her cat, but also her thumb drive with her current stories on it, any one of which could have been motive for murder. They take the drive to Logan for decryption, and he points them in the direction of three suspects: a Mayoral candidate, a diet guru, and Josef.
Josef quickly and decisively proves his innocence (invoking Oprah!), while Kent Morrow (the mayoral candidate) and Dee Dee Dwight (the diet guru) appear suspicious. They continue to investigate both leads, but the trail on Dee Dee and the model who died while on her diet, runs a little cold, while the case surrounding Kent Morrow, whose wife died in a car accident under mysterious circumstances, appears promising.
Mick, Beth and Talbot converge on Morrow’s campaign headquarters and confront him, only to see Morrow’s young daughter Bonnie dash away from the room. Mick follows her to the rooftop.
Bonnie appears ready to throw herself from the top of the building – a heavy secret weighing on her heart. She was in the car the night her mother died, and knows it was her father, drunk and angry, who had been at the wheel. Suppressing the secret was now more than she could bear. She throws herself from the top of the building, only to be saved by Mick, who could very well have died in the rescue attempt.
With Morrow’s true crime revealed, Mick, Beth and Talbot now focus their attention back on Jill Button, the model who perished on Dee Dee Dwight’s doughnut diet. On a tip from Guillermo, Mick and Beth have Talbot investigate the coroner’s report, which reveals it was tampered with at the request of Button’s plastic surgeon, Pierce Anders. Mick, Beth and Talbot agree to meet the next morning at Anders’ office to question him.
Talbot, Beth and Mick interview Anders and receive very few straightforward answers to their questions. When Talbot threatens Anders with a subpoena for his medical records, Anders reacts by shoving Talbot across the room, knocking him out. Anders reveals himself to be a vampire and pushes Beth away, then throws Mick through a plate glass desk top and leaves him for dead. Anders takes Beth and Talbot hostage in his warehouse.
After a quick visit to Guillermo to treat his severe injuries as a result of the encounter with Anders, Mick returns home to prepare for the rescue attempt and receives an unexpected visitor – Josef. Josef has come to try and talk Mick out of attacking Anders, but Mick is intent on saving Beth. When Josef proves to Mick conclusively that as a human he stands no chance against multiple vampires in a physical fight, Mick begs a reluctant Josef to turn him back into a vampire.

Mick twists his fingers into Josef’s shirt, pulling him closer, as Josef’s hands rise to Mick’s sides, a ridiculous, unnecessary defense, but the gentle pressure keeping some distance between them.
Josef can barely hear Mick’s whispered pleas, the dark vampire blood rushing through his ears, he hears Mick’s heartbeat, sees the sincerity and desperation in his eyes, feels the breath on his cheek form the word “brother,” and knows, he knows, what he has to do. How had it come to this?
“Forgive me…” he whispers, and Mick nods, bravely lifting his chin, averting his eyes, and Josef lets go, lets the vampire take over – does what the animal inside had been screaming to do from the moment he’d pushed Mick to the wall – and bites down.
Mick felt the life draining out of him. He tried to keep Beth’s face in his mind’s eye, he tried, but the pain, the pain was so great, so overwhelming. He had long lost the strength to try to pull away from Josef, and he was glad of it. His human body’s natural reaction to shrink from the hurt, to run from the terror, had passed. He was dying.

Mick was woozy. He knew, intellectually, Josef’s arm was in his mouth, before he actually felt the blood running over his tongue. He knew he had the hunger, the need. He knew it had worked. His mind floated aimlessly, still waking up, his body fully in control of every movement. He felt Josef’s arm move, felt the puncture wounds on his neck closing, felt a new feeling rush through him, pushing everything else away. It occurred to him, he’d once read somehwere, you can have anything in life, if you’re willing to sacrifice everything else for it. He sat up slowly, opened his eyes slowly… and then there was nothing but rage. He had sacrificed everything else.

The fight against Anders’ goons was a blur. It was nothing; they were not important. Josef dispatched the burly one, the larger vampire perhaps assuming he had the advantage of Josef but woefully incorrect. Mick fought the younger, more agile thug, vaguely appreciative of the extra effort it took. The physicality of vampire life was enhanced by emotions and he would be furious for a while yet. The smooth wooden stake in his hand felt dangerous, like all vampire justice.
Mick growled as Anders made a break for the door, and felt, more than heard, Josef’s smug laugh as he took Anders down. After all this, it was over so quickly. Mick swallowed his aggression, tried to put the vampire aside even as he rushed to free Beth. He had to see her face, even if it meant she now had to see his.
Mick sighed, looking down at the five large plates of food and nearly full bottle of wine. Beth was doing her best. She had smiled bravely, tried everything he’d prepared, and complimented his long-rusty cooking skills. He could tell her heart wasn’t in it.
The kiss was an unrehearsed act of desperation, seizing the moment, surprising him as much as it stunned her. He just wasn’t ready to watch her leave but could offer nothing to make her stay. Her short, fragile lifetime, endangered by entanglement with his. It was unbearable; you have forever, I don’t, a knife twisting deep in his gut.
The night air swirled around him. The moonlight at his back, he once again felt so powerful, and yet still so helpless. There was nothing he could do, not right now. Not tonight.
Beth left.

My notes.
1, Ohhh Moonlight meat. If we didn’t know how amazing his body ends up being we’d probably be thuding all over the place with this shirtless scene.
2. I love human Mick, he’s just so happy.
3. I had amazing hot dogs like that once. Truth! Outside the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C. They were so great we went back the next day to eat more. I told my friend to go buy one when he went months later, he agreed on our assessment. Of all the places I’ve been to eat in the USA, I direct people to the hot dog stand outside the museum. As you do.
4. Even though Mick would still be “alive” as a vampire (as in he is here on the planet) when he turns back into a vampire, he still sees that as a moment of death. He talks about cherishing life in this episode and seizing the day like we do because we will all die, we are mortal. Even though Mick is immortal he doesn’t see his mortality as living. Interesting. What is the mentality of someone who can not die? Or even when they are killed, come back to life? That has to fk with your head.
5. Mick is an interesting juxtaposition in Beth’s life. When all the people close to her are dying here we have Mick (who this episode aside) is (basically) immortal.
6. Heh tampons and cats continue to play a role in the acting life of AOL. H50 don’t pass this up. 😉
7. No matter how many times I watch this ep I will always wonder who thought it was a good idea to have a photo with a donut down the front of a woman’s bikini bottoms.
8. Mr Perez’s house is so Lane Kim’s house in Gilmore Girls.
9. I think Beth is missing a button in that blue shirt.
10. What other secrets does Mick have? FK U CBS.
11. I think Mick being immortal for so long would have in the longer run, seen him struggle with the limits he faced back in his human life. I wonder if the writers strike lead to them wrapping up this storyline earlier then planned.
12. “My Beth,” will always be one of my fav scenes in this show. Always. I didn’t even make notes while it was on because I was just so drawn into watching it.
13. Josef asks Mick for forgiveness even thought Mick would give it, Josef still feels guilty. Not that we’ll ever see this played out. FK U CBS.
14. Mick “like they say, life is short.” Again in Mick’s eyes he doesn’t see his vampire existence as living.
15. Mick is so damaged. Who is more damaged, him or Steve?
16. Mick jumps to the very top of the building, slightly killing an other wise perfect episode.

Josef is perhaps not a proven sire… but maybe there was something about Sarah that didn’t “work” for vampire conversion, or maybe she & Josef just had a bad reaction to each other, who knows. Or maybe since Mick had been a vampire before, it’s like one of those diseases that once you get it, it’s easier to catch a second time. Either way, totally angsty.

What an amazing question!!! I don’t even know how to begin to answer that. Mick basically hates what he is and has to deal with that for the rest of eternity. Steve has major trust issues, but I suppose that those can be worked through. Still, not sure who is more damaged.

He totally struggles with the whole ‘nasty vampire’ thing and is so tortured and angsty throughout the series. Steve has major trust issues, sure, (and at the start of S1 his people skills were a bit off :)) but I think that still pales into comparison with being stuck as a vampire for all eternity. Still, could be worse. He was immortalised at 30-odd and looking like Alex O’Loughlin rather than that poor pimply kid from one of the earlier episodes. Cheer up, Mick!

(and going by channel 10’s poor form, we may have to wait forever!). I remember reading posts on the IMDb discussion board just after season 1 started airing and there was so much hate for Alex and his so-called wooden acting, Are these people nuts? The man can do more with his facial expressions than pages of dialogue. And, as someone else has posted, he totally becomes the character. He WAS Mick and now he IS Steve and I can’t imagine anyone else in those roles.

But I think its because McG was supposed to be stoic and putting him up against such as over the top char like Danny may have given the impression it was Alex and not the char. Now I realize how brilliant he was, because I can look past the obvious and he has done such a dynamic job growing the character above what is written on the page.
If anyone thinks he’s wooden now, they just don’t want to see it.

Actually I took to McG from the very beginning and didn’t think his acting was wooden at all but then I was already a fan of Alex’s (gotta support Aussies!). Agree that McG was supposed to be stoic and SEAL-like and a complete contrast to Danny with all that posturing and flapping his arms about. I read somewhere that SC said he’d find it harder to be Steve than Danny and, not to take anything away from SC’s brilliant portrayal of Danny, I tend to agree. Much easier to complain and wave your arms around than be stoic, I say. I thought the criticism of Alex was harsh as he was doing an excellent job of being the stoic SEAL who’d not had much family love and support to soften him. Going into the armed forces so young and essentially being abandoned by your family would do that to you. I love the way the writers and Alex have developed McG so he’s more tender now and is totally into the whole ohana thing with his team (plus he’s not so scary around others – love the ep with Sean Coombs’s character’s son). The character development of McG and the other team members is what keeps me watching as, let’s face it, sometimes the crime storylines are a bit weak. Just my opinion anyway. Oops, just realised I totally hijacked this and turned it into an H50 thread…

I think (one of) the great things about H50 is that you get both characters the stoic one & the… Danny one. 😉 they get to bounce off each other and help each other be more reasonable over time.

Yep, I guess that’s kind of the point and those who criticise Alex for being wooden just don’t get it (not the wonderfully witty and intelligent people who frequent this blog, obviously :)). I love the two contrasting characters and it makes for great bromance moments, and humour, when Danny’s all like “WTF?” every time Steve does something OTT. Love the ‘neandarthal’ moments from S1. Hilarious.

Can’t remember where I read it, but I remember an interview where Alex said that wasn’t in the script, that it just felt right to him–or something like that. It did feel so real.

10. What other secrets does Mick have? FK U CBS. Mick’s secrets, Josef’s secrets — even, it occured to me… what about Guillermo! He knew to call Josef when Mick was about to run off and be stupid. But Logan makes a big deal about how Mick knows Josef but never introduced him to Logan. How does Guillermo know Josef? Do they hang out? Does Guillermo go to Josef’s freshie parties when he’s sick of the bagged blood he sells to vamps like Mick & Logan? How long has Guillermo lived in LA? Like a year? OR LIKE SINCE THE CONQUISTADORS???? I want to know!! F U CBS!!!!

4. The beach scene doesn't improve on repeat viewings, huh? Mick's little smile at the end kind of made it all worthwhile though.
5. I tried to write down some lines from Mick and Josef talking about s/x, but in the end I just wrote THIS WHOLE JOSEF/MICK CONVO, in ALL CAPS.
6. Beth, the vampire jumping thing was NOT sexy.
7. Aaaaand we're still not wearing gloves at the crime scene that the police haven't gone over with a fine-tooth forensic comb yet.

14. Beth's face when Mick asks her out! Adorable, but at the same time I couldn't help thinking – how long has Josh been worm food now? It doesn't seem like long enough.

Wow, this was an amazing episode. Lots of great lines and little moments. Another big turning point for Mick/Beth (TOO SOON! OK, I'll shut up about this now), but I really loved Mick/Josef more. This was a great episode for the bromance. Josef doesn't really believe in having human friends, but his relationship with Mick doesn't really change at all (although I suppose the cure is temporary, but he knows that if Mick gets his hands on enough of it, he'd stay human given the choice). What I loved most about the re-turning scene apart from all of it was the way Josef tried to talk Mick out of going back to being a vampire, even though he would rather Mick wasn't human, and also that he did it even after what happened with Sarah, and he was worried that it would go wrong again. His expression afterwards was part 'yay, you're a vampire again!' and part 'yay, I didn't put you in a coma!'. I love Josef.

First I had to have a really long internal conversation about just HOW I was going to use a Bertie Wooster quote in Moonlight of all things (not exactly similar genres!) and then thank goodness for Fated to Pretend the episode where it’s ok to cram all sorts of disparate stuff into your recap because it mirrors what they did in the episode, too. 1. I like the VO at the beginning – his tone of voice is so different, so un-Mick-like. I giggle every time he says “CAHR-PAY-Dee-Um” on the boardwalk.
3. Coffee face! <– there was another word in between these two. I wasn't sure whether to use it. It began with 'O'. If I were a vampire, I would probably cry a lot over not getting to drink coffee. Way more happy about coffee than OJ or junk food or teethbrushing, for serious.
4. The beach scene doesn’t improve on repeat viewings, huh? It struggles. Does not improve. It’s a weird scene!
7. Aaaaand we’re still not wearing gloves at the crime scene that the police haven’t gone over with a fine-tooth forensic comb yet. MORONS.
11. The chase scene is HYSTERICALLY funny. Sorry, but it is. By the freeze-frame right at the end I was hyperventilating so much I nearly passed out. that freeze frame at the end… Mick’s crouching tiger/hidden dragon moment. So. Frickin. Funny.
16. Fang-on Josef is scaaaaaary!! I jump every time, the camera swings around & he’s all vamped out, even when I know it’s coming. It’s just so sudden!!
17. The re-turning scene…. yeah. I’m a bit warm. Is it warm in here? yes, I believe it may be… but the first person to reach for the A/C is getting her hand slapped. 😉

So on the original airing the audience would’ve had that separation. Plus they probably would have spaced it out more but only had 4 episodes left to get them to a comfortable place for the end of season or possibly the end of series. With the forced 4 month break the timing would have seemed more natural.

Let’s assume that since he was murdered, the body was in the morge a little longer than normal for forensics, etc. let’s say a week or so has passed since he was killed to the funeral. Then we know from Mick’s little toothbrushing/hot dog munching soliloquy that he’s been human for about another week. So two-ish weeks. Not really all that long. I would hope my SO of more than a year would mourn me for a touch more than two weeks before moving on directly to another person. But they had to do what they had to do to wrap it all up. Sad facts. 😦

– Would have loved to see a scene with Mick at the grocery store.
– This was such a documentation of “firsts” for Mick… first glass of OJ, first cup of coffee, first donut. I was waiting him to run upstairs for the first poop. Wait, I remember seeing a urinal in the bathroom, but not a toilet. Surely there’s a toilet in that place.
– And why is the bed downstairs? The freezer is in the bathroom. There is more to upstairs than just the bathroom, right?
– Never could understand why he was wearing so much at the beach. I would think that curling his toes in the sand would be a must. You’re welcome.

– After the kiss on the roof, Beth looks like she can’t remember her own name. We get it, Beth. We get it.
– Why, Show?! Why do you have to end a perfectly wonderful episode with a big bowl of Velveeta cheeeeez?! There was no reason to have Mick jump up on the thing and have the moonlight behind him, yada, yada. Beth walking away was gold.

Thanks Mel, I really TRULY appreciate what you have to say about the recaps & glad they are “working” for you. I haven’t had to be so disciplined about anything in YEARS & I’m actually loving it because it reminds me of college… writing papers, research, making connections and, uh, Shakespeare. 😉 Anyway. The ledge for me was the “disjointed” feel of this ep that PNWgal mentions below — this ep ~~while so, so good~~ is really all over the map. And the emotionality of it all makes it hard to focus on “the facts.” We have Mick & Beth: will they, won’t they? Josef is remodeling (yay continuity!). We have the most complicated murder mystery the show has presented as of yet. The victim of which just so happens to be a recurring character. The introduction of Ben Talbot who I think we all can agree was there to be the eventual 3rd spoke of a Ben-Beth-Mick love triangle. AND THEN THERE ARE THE LAST TEN MINUTES OF THIS EPISODE. And honestly… I couldn’t just “recap it” like… “Josef finally relents & bites Mick, turning him into a vampire. Mick is really sad about this and sheds a tear. Then they go beat up the bad guys…” I mean really now. Normally, I try to focus on one of the themes of the episode – either reflect it in my word choices while writing or enhance/focus on it with the literary quotes. This one was the most challenging in that respect. Furthermore, this ep was a bit out there in the risks it took – and it gave me the opportunity (I feel) to do the same.
Now on to my less-than-worthy comments. MOST WORTHY. You’re keeping the sniff count!!

I always laugh on Sundays when I say to myself, “Time for my Moonlight homework.” But it’s so much funner (<<<— yeah, F U grammar) than in college. There was some required reading that I enjoyed analyzing and discussing, but others that I wanted to slit my wrists. (Don't even get me started on Portrait of the Artist as a Young man.) I admit that I approach my "homework" from a more casual direction and am in awe that you really dig in and devote heart and FEELINGS to each episode, to the point that you're inspired by quotes I haven't heard in years. Well, well, well done! I'm sad that there are only a few episodes left. =(
Mick, Mick, Mick… in the end, vampire or not, HE'S. STILL. A. GUY. While I would love to think he is Mr. Perfect, he is soooo not, all the way down to being awkward around Beth making the first moves, which she's been doing all along. It's not like her finally beating him over the head at the beach was some shocking revelation.
I think that one of the main characters of THE SCENE is the music, which is the same music in the Josh gets killered scene. It made an impact then and it has the same impact now.
So, what did Mick do with his bed after turning back to being a vampire? I'm guessing there's some small closet in that apartment that he could turn into some kind of walk-in freezer and he could put the bed in there and sleep in some kind of comfort. Heck, they have walk-in freezers at restaurants… why not in an apartment?

Josef is the unsung hero of this episode to me. He steals every scene he’s in up to the turning scene when he and Mick balance each other perfectly, and the temperature in the room warms up. Considerably.

Human Mick – all kinds of awesome. He’s just so cute and sincere. Love him on the beach. Love him with Travis. Love him eating doughnuts. Love him…aww, hell. I just love him.
Lots of love for Logan. Always. And interesting that ML vampires will drink animal blood.
Political guy = bad. Mick saving politcal guy’s daughter = good. Today’s screen caps = beautiful.
Loved the whole “vampire doctors tapping off rare blood types from their patients” angle. Of course, I love that because that led to that wonderful, wonderful Mick/Josef scene. What I love most is that it all boils down to Beth for Mick here. He has what he’s wanted back for 50 years – his humanity. I think he realizes that being human’s not all it’s cracked up to be, and not being able to save Beth hammers that home. Now that he has a choice – humanity or Beth – he doesn’t hesitate. Beth-1, Humanity-0
What hit me with this one (and something I mentioned to SJ2), is when Mick’s human, the show itself is light – brighter lighting, a little more upbeat feeling. Once Mick is Turned back, the show goes back to the the night, darker lighting, a bit heavier mood.

This episode did it for me in terms of showing the depths of Mick’s feelings for Beth. Pity that we only got a small glimpse of human Mick although, as others have posted, this ‘too soon-ness’ may have had something to do with what was going on with the show at the time. Also agree that Josef re-turning Mick was a highlight. Yeah, and very hot, too. Actually anything with Josef in it was a highlight for me. Loved the saracastic vampire and such a good contrast with angst-ridden Mick.
Funny that Mick thinks he needs to be re-turned to help Beth when he tends to get his ass kicked even when he is a vampire. I loved that about him. He’s kind of a ‘human vampire’, and not just in the physical sense. I reckon Steve would be able to protect Beth just as Steve, he’s such a ninja 🙂
And yeah, agree that the leap was corny but I can forgive that…..

The turning scene… So much perfection. So much emotion. To know that Alex got so carried away with that scene w the “my Beth” line and Jason’s needing an emo break it really hits you. Think we’ll ever get a scene this powerful between Danny and McG? That’s why this bromance is the better one IMO.

This scene gets overshadowed by the turning scene for most ppl but this is one of, if not the most memorable moment for me from the series. All the emotion, all the hard work, all the angst…came down to this moment. Mick had given it all up to save Beth, Beth came to the realization he gave up his greatest desire to save her. What was spoken? “Your face..” how many times have we said this across all our blogs??? Your faaaaaaace!! She said it and I felt it. One o the most beautifully understated, powerful moments. Damn now I think I’m making my own self want to cry. F me!

I had visions of a vampire ‘club’ working together to solve crimes all the while trying to fight being found out by the DA. Would have been really interesting to explore the backgrounds of the other vamps and find out more about how they were turned.
