Almost a Fantasy (Sonata)

Josef is doing a terrible job of staying undercover. Not only does he name a college basketball arena after his mysteriously vanished and assumed dead ex-girlfriend from the 1950s, he oversees the retirement of the jersey number of an alumni who’s not only managed by two vampires (Jackson and Emma Monaghan) but sometimes hooking up with another (Lisa). He has a freshie (Simone) who’s a friend but also his lawyer. Maybe more than a friend. He invited Mick and Beth to his party. What happened to the guy who wanted to “kill ’em all” rather than expose vampires to public scrutiny?

Not an Official Date

When the basketball player, Dominic, is murdered while Josef is feeding off freshie Simone — and she’s the primary suspect, but won’t expose Josef to use him as her alibi — the foundational problem of humans who know about vampires is again brought front and center.

Dominic is dead and Josef is upset no one is focusing on his charitable donation. Beth gossips that Ben thinks Simone was sleeping with Dominic and Josef is jealous and Mick is entertained. Josef is put out and Mick promises him they’ll investigate and find a way to clear Simone.

Mick is amused and annoyed by Josef’s idiosyncrasies.

Beth goes to speak with vampire Emma Monaghan, one of Dominic’s managers. She tells Beth her story, leaving Ireland during the potato famine, of being turned on the ocean crossing, and meeting Jackson in New York City, eventually falling in love, even though he was a human. She turned him to a vampire, and they’ve lived together for the last 150 years in married bliss.

Beth ponders vampire/human relations with Emma.

Mick goes to visit Guillermo at the morgue and get information on Dominic’s murder. Were vampires involved in Dominic’s death? Hard to tell because they were so involved in his life. The scent of vampires – and blood – are all over him.

Mick returns to his apartment to find Josef and Simone celebrating her release from lockup. Mick attempts to focus on the case, but Josef, only happy that Simone has been released and the rumors of her relationship with Dominic appear to be greatly exaggerated, celebrates by feeding off Simone and offering her arm up to Mick. With the understanding that he’s only tasting her blood to eliminate her as a suspect, he feeds…

Awkward!

Irritated that Mick would feed off Simone, an unarguably intimate event, that certainly brought Mick and Beth closer together, Beth is in a short mood as they investigate one of Dominic’s teammates at his old fraternity house.

Mick goes back to Guillermo who informs him that Dominic did have vampire blood on his body. Mick and Guillermo commiserate over the difficulty of dealing with women in general – Guillermo pointing out to Mick that when vampires enter into relationships with humans, it’s extra complicated – and he’s saving all his brainpower for dealing with vampire women.

Speaking with Jackson Monaghan, Mick learns that Dominic was on-again-off-again with Lisa, a youthful-looking vampire living on campus. Mick goes to pay her a visit an learns Dominic was also sleeping with Emma – a shocker of a revelation – considering Emma and Jackson’s supposed longevity as a couple.

However, unfortunately for the vampires, Ben has also learned this information and he and Beth go to Emma’s office to arrest her. Mick, tipped off by Beth, meets them there where Emma’s violent resisting of arrest is blamed on a psychotic break.

Well that was unexpectedly sexy.

But prison is no place for a vampire. Eventually they can no longer masquerade as human. When they can’t feed, they risk exposure. Beth, while admiring the Monaghan’s marital longevity and commitment, has questions about Mick’s plans for their future, as he avoids answering her question on whether or not he’s ever turned anyone.

At the prison. Jackson meets with Emma while Mick and Beth watch through the one-way glass. Emma threatens the entire vampire community with exposure if Mick doesn’t break her out.

Mick & Beth observe the Monaghans’ conversation.

Later that evening, Mick and Josef discuss Josef’s relationship with Simone in light of his commitment issues, while Simone herself goes to visit Beth to discuss her experiences as Josef’s freshie with someone who will understand.

Beth hears Simone say humans aren’t that important to vampires.
“To love us is to watch us die.”

But the relationships of the couples need to take a back seat to dealing with the threats Emma made at the prison. So Mick gathers Josef, Guillermo, Logan and the Cleaning Crew to plan a jail break. This is not for humans, as Beth learns when she drops by Mick’s only to be turned away at the door. This is a problem only vampires can settle.

Using Logan’s technical (and hands-on) skills, the vampire crew intercepts Emma’s transport van and releases her from human custody.

But she is still under arrest. The vampire community considers her threat of exposure to be treasonous and the punishment is death.

Bound in silver chains, the Cleaning Crew is ready with a flame thrower to execute Emma when Jackson arrives. He insists on receiving the same punishment as her. None of the vampires, including Emma, are able to sway Jackson from his decision. Their bond of love is still strong, even after all that’s happened. He stands by her side, dies with her rather than be without her, as the rest of the vampires watch.

Mick and Josef observe the execution.

When later that evening Mick relates the evening’s events to Beth, it’s a disaster. Beth has finally realized that her choices are a broken heart now or an uncertain future where she and Mick will either grow apart as she grows old, or where she becomes a vampire – the very thing Mick hates – and possibly still have a failed relationship, like Emma and Jackson failed.

She calls it off. And Mick leaves.

Beth has closed the door but Mick is unable to stay away, unable to let that door stay shut. He returns to Beth’s apartment, opening the door and coming inside even when she ignores his persistent knocking.

Mick makes his case.

Beth turns around. The time she’s spent with Mick has been so short compared to the vast stretch of his life. And yet… the smallest things about her have had a lasting impact on his heart, his mind, his memory. He loves her. That’s all she really needed to hear.

No matter what may come to pass, love remains the same.

    My fav bit of this one was the Jean Paul Richter poem. And all the quotes! Once again you amaze me with you literary knowledge. 🙂 Another great job.

    1. Ohh the girls in bikini tops and hot pants are the waitresses.

    4. I only know what March Madness is because it clashed with h50. My friend who lives in LA is a mad Lakers fan and he was totally impressed I knew about it. I neglected to tell him why I finally clued.

    • 1. I have been to my share of college alumni events — fundraisers for the athletic department even — and there weren’t any girls in hot pants. OK crap I take that back, a couple years ago I went to one such fundraiser and all the athletes ran through the banquet hall in their uniforms. Including the swimmers. This was more boy hot pants than girl hot pants though.

    -“the plague, the plague was big” (I’m going to miss Josef)
    -Beth learning about freshies, and wanting to know how many Mick has had. Jealous, Beth? (what could we have learned about freshies along with Beth?)
    -Mick and Beth dancing = me a puddle of goo
    -how much do I love that a “date” is an outing that doesn’t involve a dead body? THIS MUCH
    -once again, everyone can get into Mick’s fortress of an apartment with extreme ease. MICK YOUR LOCKS SUCK!
    -I have no words for the tongue and the freshie licking. Other than ADGHJJKLJJHGFDDSA! NO. OTHER. WORDS. I may need a moment.

    • MOMO! I ❤ you bigger than the plague was big! Mick's fortress of solitude is more like an all-access community center! Next time we're in LA we'll just drop by & help ourselves to some champange! And rummage through his files! and maybe clean out the freezer, I don't know, it depends on when he comes back. Maybe Josef will show up first, that would be good, because that would actually be fun as to when Mick showed up places… the party was usually over. 😉 I kid! I kid!

      That voice sounded like the creepy photographer guy from “Click” – maybe those vamp-kids accidentally turned him? Alas, we’ll never know.

      On some level, I almost think it’s good this show didn’t go on — it might have gotten cheesey and lame as their relationship progressed. I do wish there were a few more episodes in my dvd collection, however.

      • I wonder who sent the vamp list to ADA Talbot. Who had it in for all the vampires, but also knew who they all were? I still somehow think it was tied to Emma & Jackson, maybe they had raised a child together or something & the kid was out for revenge? I don’t know, could have been anything. I do like your theory that the lost Boys accidentally turned the photog dude. But even if that guy became a vamp, doesn’t explain how he got/made the list. HMM!!!!

        On some level — I am right there with you. Better to be left wanting more than have it get stupid and unbearable. HOWEVER, yes, having 6-10… ok 12, ok even 16 more episodes probably wouldn’t have hurt and we’d still be in the same place at the end of the day – wanting more.

  3. You guys have summed up more of my FEELINGS (occassionally I get them)…..
    Love Logan and his Lando code name.
    The scene with Mick and the basketballs is full of all sorts of screencap and gif goodness (cough cough Paula), “Look at me! I could be in the NBA! Look I can hit the hoop from half court!” grinning like a little boy….killing me.
    I love that when he told Beth he got hit in the face with the SAP his Aussie was slipping out….

    This rewatch has been EPIC, ladies. THANK YOU STEPH SOOOO MUCH for instigating and leading us along, and writing such inspired episode recaps. This was an amazing way to get through the 5-0 hiatus!

    Despite the fact that sometimes I didn’t want to do my homework (the FEELINGS!) I loved every minute of it.

  5. How can a guy who’s hair looks so awful for an entire episode, still be soooooooo pretty and goreous?????

    This episode makes me kind of glad it all ended there……ending on a high leaving us wanting more. Like an old fairy tale…..they lived happily ever after……..
    And then at the same time it makes me sad……And together with it I still feel Alex’s own sadness over Moonlight when I think about what he wrote on his MySpace blog.

  6. Already having an emotional day, so this is just making it worse. I so did not want to watch this episode and I put it off all day yesterday. Then I took a deep breath and plunged into the inevitable. I have so much enjoyed these weekly recaps with you all!

    Random thoughts on…on… FUCBS. In the butt. Without lube.

    – Awwww… Sara Whitley tribute.

    – It became clear to me quickly that the hair people said, “F/ck it. It’s the last episode. We just don’t care.”

    – And then it became clear to me that Alex and Jason said, “F/ck it. It’s the last episode. We don’t care that our hair is really long.”

    – Mick and Beth are standing so far apart at the event because?

    – Not a fan of the all black suit.

    – Loved this song before Moonlight. Still love it now.

    – Vamps drinking champagne? Forever and ever we can establish that vamps can drink alcohol. The question is… can they get drunk?

    – Alex looked like he had started to lose some of the Mooney Meat.

    – He licked her arm. He. Licked. Her. Arm. If I was that actress, I would have been completely well done after that and left snail tracks all over the set. Yeah, I said that.

    – Shouldn’t Emma be much stronger than Mick?

    – The last of the bromance scenes. I feel like I’ve been punched in the gut.

    – Not a fan of how much Beth walked the fence on accepting him as a vampire and not accepting him throughout the season.

    – I don’t like this cleaner!! She’s a harsh b/tch! And who made her judge and jury?! I do like the Vampire Consortium though. But who is in charge of the cleaner? Who makes these decisions?!

    – I still think that chopping their heads off would have been nicer.

    – Josh 2.0 has an apple on his desk. Not sure why I noticed that. And WTF is with the Deep Throat phone call and the list? The series was over. Why stir all this up now?!

    – Damn Alex looked hot in that last scene. Definitely looked a little bit thinner in the face… or am I crazy?

    – I thought that everyone’s eyes looked a little different in the ep and the screen grabs confirm my suspicions that there were several folks in real tears during filming.

    – I have few comments because I spent most of the ep in a daze of sadness that this is the end of the rewatch.

    Sniff count: 2
    Bionic hearing: 5

    Line of the ep: “I only want to make out with you.” (Like there was ever any doubt that it would be the hands down winner.)

    Runners-up:
    “But this so awkward. I love awkward.” – Josef
    “Play nice.” – Mick
    “I got hit with a sacred ass paddle.” Mick

    Unfinished business:
    Coraline. This more than anything. Yes, I would have loved more on Josef’s past, but the opportunities to find out about Coraline, the family, the cure… Dammit! In my mind, Mick would want to somehow go after her to rescue her from the in-laws and chase after more cure. He still would end up with Beth, but at least know for sure whether a permanent cure was possible.

    S to the J – these recaps have made Mondays bearable and I have been touched by the heart and soul that you have put into them.

    • This episode is like the worst thing that ever happened and yet…. thank f/ck it didn’t end anywhere else.

      – Shouldn’t Emma be much stronger than Mick?

      Maybe? Depends on if Moonlight vampires get stronger as they get older or if like in Twilight they are stronger the younger they are (this was explained as the vampire DNA or whatever still feeding off the human bits inside you until they are gone). This would explain why Dr Feelgood baby vampire kicked Mick’s butt, but by the time you get past a week or so (per Twilight) everything was equal again. I don’t think Moonlight explicitly ever said that vampires get stronger the older they get. Just more experience makes you craftier… but Mick beat Lola, and she was probably the oldest vamp we saw.

      Josh 2.0’s list: I liked how there were strikethroughs through Emma & Jackson’s names, also a strikethrough for Pierce Anders who was the plastic surgeon vamp who kidnapped Ben & Beth – so that may have been the name he would have latched on to while investigating Mick. Maybe having Josef’s name on the list would have brought back the investigation into his office’s explosion. So many things….

      Unfinished Business — yeah I am 100000% in agreement the Cure would have been a focal point throughout the series… can’t imagine how it wouldn’t have been.

  7. Babe, I want to thank you so much for these wonderful recaps, and a thank-you to BAMF for turning me on to your blog. I have so enjoyed revisiting ML with you all, and I’m right there with spurs – I did. not. want. to watch this episode, because it just brought back how heartbroken I was when they cancelled ML.

    “F U CBS” will come up frequently in my post.

    I’ll admit it freely – I cried for DAYS after this episode and to this day won’t watch that door close at the end. Alex’s Mick left such an impression on me – I will be an Alex fan for life because he gave me Mick. And I will always love Mick.

    *sniffle* Ahem…on to the episode

    They FINALLY managed to make that horrible wig-thing on Beth look halfway decent at the beginning, and I LOVE that dress she’s wearing. I find it interesting how shocked she is about Josef drinking Simone’s blood – where’d she think their blood came from? The Blood Fairy? I did get a kick out of how she interrogated Mick about his own freshies.

    Simone is adorable, but that yellow dress made her look like a really pretty banana. Speaking of…

    That whole “taking a sample” scene. Holy sh/t. Simone’s reaction to Josef biting her is hot, but Mick’s reaction is even hotter. I think Josef knows EXACTLY what he’s doing, and it’s not just getting Mick a blood sample. If we’d had more ML, I think we would have seen more of Josef slowly but surely nudging Mick back to embracing his vampire self. F U CBS.

    Beth’s jealous. Again – not sure what she thinks vampires that aren’t Mick eat. It’s like truly believing your hamburger just comes from those styrofoam packages at the grocery store, not from cows being killed in a slaughterhouse. Truth to tell…I think Beth was jealous Mick wasn’t drinking from HER.

    I love Guillermo. That is all.

    It’s a good thing Alex is an actor. He would have starved to death if he’d pursued basketball.

    Ben Talbot’s character could have been SO awesome. F U CBS.

    As much as Mick might hate being a vampire, he understands the rules. Keep the secret. Do not endanger the vampire community. Emma signed her own death warrant by threatening to expose the L.A. vampires

    Emma and Jackson, married for 150 years? Thanks, but no. I just celebrated 25 years and that seems like a lifetime.

    “Have you ever Turned someone?” That look on Mick’s face? F U CBS. Just…F U.

    “To love us is to watch us die”. No way Mick doesn’t Turn Beth in the future. And no way Beth doesn’t want it.

    Josef, Logan, Josef and the Cleaner all in one place. Claudia Black as a Cleaner – truckful of awesome. (I’d heard tell the show wanted to tap her originally for the role of Cleaner in Ep 3, but she was pregnant at the time.)

    I love Logan. That is all.

    Vampires dispensing vampire justice. I love the juxaposition of Josef not wanting to watch the execution and Mick insisting they had to. What a complete 180 from Mr. “So Kill Them All” from ep1.

    Ben and The List – another potentially cool storyline. F U CBS.

    And then we come to the end. Beth’s not sure she can live with vampires’ rules, and Mick knows he can’t live without her. He comes back, remembers she was barefoot at the fountain and tells her he loves her. And I’m bawling like a baby all over again, and shutting down iTunes before the door closes.

    ML had its problems – hokey dialogue, plot holes big enough to drive a semi through, BTS headaches. But…it moved me. It inspired me, helped me find my lost love of writing and introduced me to a world and people I never knew existed. I’ve made awesome friends because of it, and continue to make awesome friends because of it.

    Ms. SJ2, you have done an incredible job with these recaps and I thank you. #grateful

      Ha ha ha too bad we’ll never know… that’s how Twilight ended so part of me thinks this is the one where the Vampire gets cured & lives normal life with Human Girl? Final ep of Show she’s preggers? Television Happy Ending?? Of course this is not how My Version of Moonlight ends… which I will keep to myself because it’s super emo. Even Infant has a happier ending for Moonlight than I do.

      ps- I double dog dare all of us in wonderful, loving, long-term committed relationships to go home and ask our partners what we were wearing the day/night we met. Mr. JK knows Beth was barefoot, but only cause I watched that final scene 3-4 times (orgy of emotional self-torture). I’m not sure he knows what I was wearing the day we met- he didn’t volunteer that information if in fact he does remember & I’m not interested in giving a True Love Pop Quiz but thank goodness for excellent Vampire memory recall &/or the fact that the writers only had to rewind back 15 epis to see what Beth was really wearing in “NSTaV.” 😉

    This episode is like H50 2.11, the only thing it did wrong was follow 2.10. It's a good episode…but a let down to me after episode 15 which was a complete high for me. It also has the bittersweetness of being the end. FU CBS!!

    so much on my brain right now I can't get it all down in writing yet.

    • Yeah, me a Mooney! Well it certainly is all wrapped up in MY LOVE FOR YOU GUYS because I can never & will never separate my first watching of the show from the great care & love you all showed me back then. Just perfect. Wonderful memories & an experience I will truly never forget!!

  10. Even though late to the party, I’ve loved reading the ML recaps and comments. There’s nothing much more that I can add to the brilliant observations above. I loved the last episode and it’s so sad that the show didn’t continue. That whole teaser with the list and the DA – arggghhh, doing that to us with no second series to come. FU CBS. Alex acted the sh/t out of this episode, crappy basketball skills aside. Loved the final moments of the series and so glad Mick and Beth were together at the end. Emo stuff aside, Logan rocked this episode and his ‘Leroy Jenkins’ moment was a hit at our place (totally appealed to my teenage son who promptly found that bit on YouTube and played it to death).

    We could always create ‘a second series’ ourselves and decide on the plot developments that we would like to have seen happen. Or too depressing a task?

    • Andrea! Thank you for joining in the conversation, it’s truly appreciated, we love all the different viewpoints people have. I am not sure if it would be depressing to imagine what the second season of Moonlight would have held… I just think no one would agree on the plot lines. 😉
