The Moonlight Parking Lot

Want to discuss certain facets & plot lines of ML but don’t want the group to get too far ahead of itself?

Don’t want to forget a topic you find worthy of discussion?

Don’t want to have to read through a few hundred comments to try & remember what you were talking about that one time?

Park it here, baby!

Just leave a comment on this page with that thought you don’t want to forget! I’ll update the list & be sure to reference discussion topics when the episode in question is “aired!”

Discussion Topic List:

Episode 5 – Spurschick asked do vampires emotionally mature past the age that they were turned? You’d think that the years of experience would make the answer a natural “yes,” but if you could be 30 forever, or younger as is the case with Josef, would you find yourself “acting your age,” so to speak, meaning you would always act the age that you were turned?

To discuss when appropriate: Ess said: “Being a vampire is an impediment to their relationship only in Mick’s mind.” – not totally true. But I can’t say more as I’d be going into near spoiler territory….

  1. Epi 3 Mick is wearing a Fluer de Lis necklace….was it a gift from Coraline? Why would he still be wearing that? Oh mick…still so in love with your ex-wife. 😦 One of the few people in your life that would be around forever. Oh wait, he still he thought he had killed her. Oh my! Poor, emo mick…

    • So we learn something new every time……I also always thought the necklace was just some sort of fancy cross….
I read in an interview, Alex said all the jewelry and there origin would have been explained, had the series gone on!!
BTW…he always wears that necklace and the ring….he only takes it of when he goes in the freezer, as far as I can see and remember.

      • Why does he get nekkid when he goes in the freezer? I don’t get it. Is Mick just a freaky, freak? I mean, he’s sleeping alone so there really is no need for nekkidness. Unless. Well. Mick, you should really do that outside the freezer area when the need ‘arises’. #justsayin

        • Think clothes will feel damp and wet inside a freezer….

Wonder if needs CAN ‘arise’ in those cold temperatures?? #justsayin

          • Shrinkage is never a good look. (and I can’t believe I just wrote that)

            • Yes, I just think thoughts and dreams would really have to get hot and steamy, to get any kind of stirring happening in that cold hard box……

            • When I did a fan fic a while back that picked up after the last epi, Mick and Beth were trying to figure out where to ‘do the deed’ for the first time and when the freezer was mentioned–well, here’s what I wrote:

“Hmm. Let me think about this for a minute. A romantic evening with the sexiest vampire around, followed up with a steamy night in luxury. The alternative is either the couch, the kitchen counter, or your freezer.” She tilted her head toward each in turn while her arms were wrapped around my neck. “Ooh, we could always hit the shower together, you know, to make up for last time. But I think I’ll take option A and go for the romantic evening out. Unless you just want to go to my place.”

“The freezer huh, I never thought of that one. But I think I’d rather not wake up to a Beth-cycle.”

“Yeah, and besides, cold makes things…um…smaller.”

“Not for vampires. But it does make other things…ah…perkier. And I wouldn’t mind seeing that.”

Okay, we were getting a little carried away. Her seductive grin was back, and was more than I could take. And when combined with the topic of conversation I was ready to opt for any option that meant we didn’t have to wait long, freezer included, so I said, “You know, I think we better change the subject before I take you anywhere I can.”

Sorry, couldn’t resist posting this. Thought you guys would get a kick out of it.

                Best idea….

The backseat of the Mercedes Benz, might have been a good idea too…. 😆
Just as uncomfortable as the freezer, I think, but at least softer.

              • Aww, we never got enough of flirty Mick & Beth! 😀 I wonder how many “happy” moments they would have had before circumstances conspired against them.

  2. How does this parking lot work…..do we need to make an appointment with Mick? 😀
Or do we need to state on a comment of an episode that we want to “park” on that subject and get added to the list above?
Or do we post an overall discussion point here on the comments?
I have one or two burning questions regarding the overall story, that I would like some theories and discussion on (well that is if anybody is interested to discuss it of cause)

    Posted by FOYeur | June 18, 2012, 1:57 am
    • No appointments necessary! 🙂

If you wanted to make sure we discussed something when that episode came around, mention it here, I’ll keep track & make sure we don’t skip anything we wanted to say.

Other than that if you have “big picture” items you want to discuss, go for it, I think the only people who should be coming to this page are not-first-timers so spoilers aren’t an issue.

In my mind the only thing that should really influence someone beyond their control, would be physical development.
In the case of the “young” vamp in Epi 5 he is stuck in puberty…..not a fate I would want to wish anybody.

At what stage during our life does our physical development no longer influence our emosional growth?…..that would be the question in my mind that needs to be answered here, to know if any of them are stuck in a age appropriate/spesific mindset.

    Posted by FOYeur | July 1, 2012, 12:40 am
    • I think they would have to continue to emotionally mature. You can’t live 200, 300, 400 yrs and see the evolution of society and not be matured by it. Maturity will always be different for everyone, not everyone reaching the same level over a lifetime and that’s prob true here too. But there is no way that ‘kid’ vamp wasn’t more mature than just 16 measly years.

      Posted by ESS @H50BAMF | July 2, 2012, 6:37 am
      • I agree that he must have matured by what he experienced, but that he was trapped by the functions of his hormones that kept him at a certain age. Sometimes what happens in our bodies on a hormonal level can override all forms of sanity, maybe?
And then of cause his physical appearance than must have raised eye brows everywhere when he wanted to make advances (of a s*xual nature)
Must be honest all in all I see why they wanted to tell this story – but there are just to many things surrounding the mythology, backing it up,that does not ad up for me…….

  5. We saw Mick get turned and then we saw him over by a car being all crazy and Coraline showing up with someone for him to feed on. It almost seems like he split the honeymoon suite in a hurry and then she found him later with dinner? Did he just run away and grow up the next 30 years without her until she showed with little Beth? Considering what happens to baby vamps, I don’t see this scenario happening. Soooo… what did 30 years of marriage look like? Do you suppose Mick got his vamp on with her? Kinda like what we saw with 80s Mick?

    Posted by spurschick | July 9, 2012, 2:47 pm
    • – Did he just run away and grow up the next 30 years without her until she showed with little Beth?
Well they were at least together till after 1955. Josef says that she introduced them. And Josef only moved to LA after ’55 according to Epi 10 (unless he visited them earlier)
And Mick did say in Episode 3, that Coraline looked after him after he was turned.
      – Do you suppose Mick got his vamp on with her?
I would like to believe things could have been really hot between them…..but then he did say in Epi 1 that he has been denying himself the touch of another for 60 yrs (It always bugged me that he said 60…because it is only 55yrs since they got married – but I recently watched the original pilot and there he actually meet Coraline in 1947….which make it 60yrs, they just never corrected the script)
In any case….maybe he meant by “the touch of another”, somebody human?…..so maybe thay did get their vamp on together…..and I am fanning myself and need to lie down now….

  6. I’m going to go with Mick was A-OK with pre-marital s.xing because a few eps from now with his ex-Army Buddy’s wife.. thinking the baby might be his? And this was pre-Coraline. Unless Mick is unaware how Babies are made. Which is another thing altogether. 😆

    • I agree with you Steph.
And I also don’t think Mick just stayed at kissing her, after he broke that window……with that kind of passion they must have sealed the deal that evening already!! I just don’t see how you do something like smashing a window…then kiss a bit and go home… 😉

  8. I will just post this before it gets even longer……….
Physical Mythology of the Moonlight vampires:
(Please note, I don’t really know a lot about any vampire mythology. I have never followed any of the other vampire stories and their mythology. I am only going on what we see and hear in Moonlight and from that together with physiological facts, I made my conclusions. This is only a Moonlight study, because of Alex and his wonderful character Mick, nothing else)
Why do vampire stories need mythology and why do we need to know something about it when we watch a story. It is very simple. It is not real. It is like a game or a sport. It needs rules to function; otherwise you can’t play it or enjoy it. I find that the games and sports where I know the rules the best, I enjoy the most. Every vampire story is a different game and we can enjoy the game better if we know its rules
This is what I have so far. If anybody have read or seen any other explanations please ad and we can discuss it all. I am making a lot of conclusions from what we see and nothing is really based on facts that I have read. It is also a v v long time since I have studied physiology and I am going on the simple stuff I can remember and not really looking deeper into it at all. (Where I add anything that the creators specifically said I will state so)
To make it easier I am going to break down the body in its different systems and I am going to start with the Nervous system:
Vampires do feel pain. – Mick said so himself (getting shot hurts like hell) and we can also see when they are stabbed and staked how it hurts them. And Josef also shows he is hurting when Mick is removing bullets from him in Episode 10.
Therefor I conclude that their Nervous system functions and can send those (electrical) impulses of pain to the brain. They can also see, hear, smell and taste rather well, which also indicate that those waves and impulses are sending across beyond normal. (Although there taste seems to be for blood only, it is much enhanced)
This brings me to the next system. It is also the most important to Vampires – the Circulatory system (Cardiovascular system).
Their hearts beat……we see that with the vamp that is executed in 12:04AM. We also see it with Coraline in Sleeping Beauty. It all makes sense, because the beating of the heart is derived from an electrical impulse that keeps it going.
It would seem that the circulation of blood through their bodies is what makes it possible for vampires to move around and function…..when they get staked it the heart, they are paralysed because their blood can’t move around.
I will revisit the whole blood and sensation thing later on, because there are other factors that come in later with other systems.
Let’s move on to the Renal System (Urinary tract) and why we say they need an urinal……because they do, otherwise they would not have gone to all the trouble to put one in Mick’s bathroom.
The kidneys are just a filter that cleans the blood. Blood passes through it and what is not needed is eliminated through the bladder. There are no chemical processes happening here.
That brings us to the Digestive system (Gastrointestinal system). There are two functions involved here. One is of food physically passing through the system and the second is of food actually being broken down (digested) and then being used as fuel for a normal human body. The second function is not needed, because we know Vampires only live on blood. (Mick also said so in Episode 13) The blood only gets transferred into the blood stream, where it does its work. In theory all fluids should then be able to pass into the circulatory system. From there the drinking of the alcohol. Alcohol will help with preservation of the undead body, but any other fluids will just speed up the decay. My theory is that they can’t really taste the alcohol, but they can get the inebriated effect from it (because it works on the nervous system). So they do in fact drink to get drunk and not for the taste (If they want taste they add some blood to it)
Food will therefor just go untouched through the system – marshmallow in marshmallow out. This is why Vampires don’t eat ….it is all for nothing. They can’t taste the food and they can’t digest it, so why would they. However they can taste the blood (in heightened form, because they can even distinguish blood types)……for professional purposes as we see in Sonata.
The next system the Respiratory system is the one that are the most difficult to interpret, because nothing I have picked up gives any real clues to it. I am of the opinion that the Vampires only use their lungs to take in air and pass out that same air, no exchange of Oxygen (O2) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the lungs happen. Therefor I say that they only imitate the breathing proses for two main reasons. To actually look human and to have air that can pass over their voice boxes, so that they can speak.
Reasons why I say their lungs don’t perform as normal:
    1. Vampires will avoid anything that can enhance decay – O2 is one of the main causes of decay. It gives life to the living, but it helps speed up the rotting proses in the dead (look at any fruit after it has been plucked – if you can keep it away from heat, moisture and O2, it will keep longer)
    2. The proses of O2 being converted into CO2 actually gives off heat – Vampires have no heat signature as seen in Sleeping Beauty.
    3. If they needed O2 to live as undead, they would not have been able to survive, sleeping in airtight freezers.
Next we move on to the skin. Most Vampires stories specifically state that the Vamps feel cold. On Moonlight nobody touching Mick ever says anything about that. Either the creators just ignored this because they found it too difficult to work with or the vamps actually to take on some of the heat from the air around them and even start to decay a little every day outside of their freezers and that makes them warm to touch.
One of the questions that have been raised is whether vampires sweat. We are told they don’t give a heat signature, but we see Mick sweat and burn up in Fever. We are told that Vampires can be killed by decapitation and being burned, but they can also die a very slow and painful death by rotting away when exposed to heat and the sun too long.
So in fact Mick is actually rotting to death in Fever. What happens when something rots – it gives of moister and heat. From there I came up with a theory that Mick is not sweating like us to cool down, but he is oozing moister and giving of heat from his decay.
This is where I want to come back to the nervous and circulatory systems – Vampires and having sex.
What do we need to have and to enjoy sex – sensation and circulation. Without those two ingredients, no sexing I am afraid. Lucky for our Vamps, they have both in heightened form so they should even have more enhanced sexing than we mere mortals.
My study is far from complete and nothing is cast in stone, because it is all speculation…….

    • Amazing, FOYeur! Really interesting idea about the O2 especially. Your theory about why Mick ‘sweats’ was truly revolting, and I mean that with the greatest of admiration! (Also: “marshmallow in, marshmallow out”. It’s a good thing I don’t really eat marshmallows…)

I think re: the cold to the touch thing – yes, I can see how that would work, the same as taking a steak out of the fridge – it gets warm but it doesn’t generate heat, and it decays more the longer it’s left out. (Not that I’m comparing him to a piece of meat, you understand. 😉 ). But vamps would have the ability to heal, so once they’re back in the deep freeze, they can repair that damage?

      • But vamps would have the ability to heal, so once they’re back in the deep freeze, they can repair that damage?
That is exactly why they need to sleep in freezers.
I think it is also why Mick was so vulnerable in Fever…..he did not get his recovering sleep, before Beth called him.
I also think your steak thing explains what I wanted to say nicely…..you always paint a picture better than me. AND of cause he is a nice piece of meat (Mooney Meat)…..sigh
And sorry for the revolting stuff….I am not squeamish about anything like that, so i sometimes forget others might find it as such. 😀

    • Appropos of nothing the other night my husband asked me if Vampire’s digestion just fed directly into their circulation (I guess he listens in when I watch Moonlight, eh?). I thought about it — I guess their digestive system just fuels the process of vamps creating their own blood (since we know “vampire blood” is a thing) which maintains their bodies’ moisture (being important in the way you describe above). What is interesting to me is that vampire bodies apparently need as much “maintenance” as human ones do in that we see Mick working out on a number of occasions, providing him his bulkier build as opposed to Josef who is more slender, less muscular, but fits his gentleman of leisure lifestyle. And being a vampire in ML universe isn’t a 1-way ticket to hotnesss like it is in others (like Twilight) as once we get a few more eps up, we meet the basement dwelling, video game playing hacker vampire – who got chubby on an all-blood diet, i assume because of his sedentary lifestyle. Or maybe you are stuck the body type/mass you had when you were turned? Like why the teenaged vamp never ages. But does your hair grow? Fingernails? Obviously more to consider here. 😉

      Posted by SJ2 (Junk Kicker) | July 17, 2012, 10:45 am
      • They must have some kind of metabolism to need sustenance – so it seems logical that they could change their body shape.

Fingernails and hair – surely the hair was shorter on the wedding night?

        Posted by Alicia | July 17, 2012, 12:16 pm
      • The just “create” their own blood in a sense that the blood they take in feeds their own blood in their system and replenish what was used up to “heal” their bodies. They do not manufatcure/create new blood as is stated by Mick (I think in Fever, where he talks about renters and owners)
My theory is that when their SIre feeds them their blood, which we have seen can even be just a little bit, their blood takes those characteristics (blueprint). They can then feed on any bloodtype, but it will be changed once in contact with their own blood…….

The “maintenance” issue: I do not believe they can really change their shape by exercises. I think Mick was just getting rid of frustrations…. 😀
If we look at Sarah Whitley….she looks normal and no amount of passive exercise by caretakers, would have kept her in that shape. She was only fed and kept alive with intravenous blood.
        – Or maybe you are stuck the body type/mass you had when you were turned? Like why the teenaged vamp never ages.
I believe this to be true…..

But does your hair grow? Fingernails?
That is a difficult one. We loose hair constantly and it has to be regrown…..In theory they should only replenish what was lost. But fingernails and hair are actually dead at the ends because they die down the further they are away from the roots. So my theory would be they do grow to replenish the dead parts, but if you don’t cut it, it will grow……if that makes any sense outside my own head at all?!

  10. I so wish we still had all the discussion threads from the old VFA (Vampire Fetishists Association) on Moonlight Fans. There were some really in depth, and lengthy discussions on everything from Vampire mythology, history, archetypes, physiology, etc etc. Sadly it was all lost when the site shut down.

I do have an interview I did with Moonlight’s creator and former executive producer, Trevor Munson, where he talks about some of the aspects of the show and the vampire mythology specifically, if anyone is interested in reading it.

    • I would love a link to that, Emerald! And I do find it sad when site runners feel the need to delete everything – I would be heartbroken if certain sites vanished from the net… I put my heart & soul into commenting and discussion sometimes & if that were just GONE? Devastating.

      • Here’s a link to it from my Josef/Mick Tumblr 🙂

“This was a Q&A I did with Trevor last year. Originally it was done as an exclusive for the Moonlight VampSisters Messageboard, but since a reasonable amount of time has passed I’ve decided to share it with a wider audience.

The Q&A is divided into four sections, questions about Moonlight, questions about Trevor’s novel, Angel of Vengeance (the inspiration for Moonlight), questions regarding fan fiction, and general questions. ”

And if you’ve got, oh say a spare few hours I’ll give you the sordid history of the Moonlight fandom, well from around November 2007 at least. There be various gates ‘Garlicgate’, ‘Slashgate’, ‘Busgate’, ship wars a plenty, frogs a ribbiting, ducks a quacking, Moonrangers, Moonpies, and all round general mayhem. 😉
