It’s The Little Things is finished.
The version of Microsoft Paint I used to draw the original panels, v.5.1, is no longer available to me as I recently went through a computer upgrade at work (from Windows XP, to Windows 7, if you’re interested). Version 5.1 looks like this, it may look familiar to you if you have/had an older Windows OS:
So… “Drawing at work?” you may be asking? Yes, mom, at work. It’s The Little Things began as my 21st century equivalent of doodling on paper during work meetings (in this case, conference calls), where I was at my desk with my headset on.
What does this have to do with anything? Humor me (humor yourself) for a minute, and click –>here<– to read the first two installments of ITLT. Notice a few things. First, how short and fat everything is. That’s work done in MS Paint 5.1.
Notice what’s missing with Stick!Steve until #27? (and then, even afterwards, because I don’t know a good thing when I see one?)
Now compare the style and look of that piece to Stick!Steve in Prison, the McG emo-fest co-written by Infant, which I did on my home computer. Notice how spindly, shaky and spider-like he looks in comparison? That’s because I was using the newer version — MS Paint 6.1 — and very badly, too. I hadn’t yet figured out how to use it.
This is the interface for MS Paint 6.1. Lots of different features and effects; even the standard/default colors are different than v5.1. The biggest difference is the default thickness of the main pencil/brush drawing tool. It takes some customization to get them to look even close to similar.
Eventually, I was able to find my current happy medium. But what I was never able to do was start something at work and finish it at home. Not only the brush widths are different, but there’s also the ability to zoom in AND zoom out in 6.1, and a variety of other differences in the interface make it nearly impossible to merge work between the two – without the artist or even, god forbid, the audience noticing the differences.
Those of you paying *really* close attention are going to catch me in a lie here, but let’s see if I can get away with it.
TODAY my employer upgraded to Windows 7 and MS Paint 6.1. So for the last week and a half, I have been rushing to finish It’s The Little Things (Part 3) in the old version of Paint. For the sake of thematic consistency. Because this is who I am.
It’s been over a year since ITLT parts 1 & 2 were published. It’s been the most important thing to happen to me in a long time and I just can’t thank you all enough for your support. It’s been a completely creative journey and I’m amazed at where it’s lead me. Thank you.
So without further build up, It’s The Little Things, Part 3, the final part of the promised trilogy, presenting fifteen things for which Steve McGarrett is thankful, or which make him very, very happy.
Any questions? Please ask! I don’t expect you to read my mind & know what I’m on about in a given panel. Let me know what you like. That’s what this is all about, after all. Thanks again to everyone who contributed suggestions for Parts 1 & 2, and especially to Justine, for giving me such a great title for this series.
First thing that caught my eye……
42) Good news – teehee, we haven’t seen him tasered in a long time.
44) ?? – Is that the ghost?
44-yes that is Ghost!Dad!
Stick!Ghost!Dad FTW!!
The Next Generation! Yaaay!!
The skull and crossbones on the popcorn bowl!
Sang Min!!! (I love Steve’s eyes in this one)
Awww, a happy ending *sniff* what a good way for The Little Things to finish. Thank you for brightening up our lives with your creative genius ❤
😀 Thank you for letting me know which ones stood out to you. I certainly enjoyed giving each of the characters a little space (excepting, again, of course, poor Kamekona).
Ghost!Dad! With his police man hat. Love. It.
I love his little kicky legs. No handshakes here!!!
StickGhostDad is awesome! Love McG driving a bus like a boss, too. RIP ‘The Little Things’.
Thanks Andrea! That bus was fun to draw.
Noooo! It can’t be finished!
If we get six seasons I’ll do another… by then there should be enough material to do another set. 😉
44!! Oh how I love you!
I had some blanks… thank goodness for new episodes. 🙂
#34 BUS DRIVING LIKE A BOSS!!
#39 NOT SO “SUBTLE STEVE” PUTTING THE MOVE ON! Lmao!!!
#40 STICK MCLUCY FTW!!!
So. Much. Love!!!!
I LOLed a lot drawing #39…. but #40 was one of the FIRST ones I had the concept for!!!
#37 (fishing), #40 Lucy), #42 (taser factory) and #45 (happy ending) are killing me dead.
HAD to include the goofy hat …. HAD TO!
The taser one, I have to admit, came from a list that Justine and I wrote (like a year ago) of things McG hated. Every other thing on this list was “tasers.” Every. Other. Thing.
I don’t recall such a list!
We were on Sardonic…. I can’t remember when. I just wrote down our ideas for later…. 😀 #FunTimes
I love the inclusion of the goofy hat. 😀
I can’t believe it’s been over a year since the first ITLT! They are so much fun. And I love stick Sang Min’s mullet.
#RIPSangMinsMullet I hadn’t ever drawn him before but I think the hat and mullet are very distinctive!! 😆
But but but…….I’m gonna miss the little things!!!!
I know, I feel the same, but I had forgotten how small those little boxes were!!!
Tie! Dress hat!
Knocked out eyes Of LOVE! Red shorts!
Bowtie!
Little kid faces!
Stick!McG+Stick!Cath4Evah!
Annoyed Stick!Danny and overjoyed Stick!Steve!
Goofy fishing hat!
McFamily Reunion!
Bluetooth! THE COUCH! McStickMoves!
STICK!LUUUUUUCY!
Football!
TASERS OUT OF BUSINESS LOL!
SANG MIN’S MULLET! Stick!Steve’s EYES!
OMG OMG OMG IT’S STICK!GHOST!DAD!
Awww… Happy Ending!! with beer!
I guess it’s fair to say that I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!
SAY IT ISN’T OVER!!
😆 Thanks Momo — I certainly had a lot of fun drawing all those things. Especially Sang Min. And the McG family reunion. And all the rest of it. Arrrggghhh you’re making me want to do more but I swear we are PLUMB OUT OF THINGS and also those boxesaresosmallyouguys.
REAL LOVE TO YA MOMO!
Over a year? That went quickly! I know you’ll have another brilliant idea so while we might not get any more things Steve loves, I know we’ll get something else great. 😀
Infant….. YOU make me happy. Thanks babe.
I can´t figure out what that blue thing is on the first pic?
I loved so many little details, pretty much everything Momo mentioned too, but that last image with buddies and beer watching the sunset on the bench, that one captured the beauty of HI 😀 loved it!
😆 That’s his dress blue navy hat!
Thanks Paula! I am glad that a few of the recent episodes have given us some “happy” moments.
I’m busy looking fondly at the dress blue thigh holsters …
The concept of Dress Blue Thigh Holsters just really made me laugh…. and it just occured to me that in that first full row there’s no normal brown thigh holsters… and barely any in the second!
Bravo, babe…I grinned like a fool all the way through this, but “bus drivin’ like a boss” made me choke on my coffee. Thank you for making Friday a little more fun!
😆 Glad you liked it. The idea for this came right at the mid-way point of last season (ep 2.13) when things were looking very 😦 for Steve. Joe had just walked off into the night (that scene in the truck! I was tortured! You remember.) and we were all looking for things to smile about. Most of the items in this last installment are inspired by events from seasons 2 & 3 with the school bus being a little bit of overlap… basically, when this first started, my Paint skillz were brand new… trying to draw something that resembled a school bus was way beyond my abilities! After a year of pratice though… easy. Had a harder time trying to decide what color the little faces in the windows should be. 😉
I love those little disembodied faces!
Wait, is McG proposing to little Lucy in #40? Down on one knee!
At first I thought Cath was wearing her phone ear-piece thingee in #39 – but then realized it was McG’s hand. Should have known – she doesn’t need the bluetooth when he’s right there on the couch, he’s the only one that calls her (for favors or……
LOVE Papa’s ghost!
LOL, I thought at first it was supposed to be McG proposing to Cath, especially with the caption “the next generation,” like they were going to get busy right then and there and start the next generation 🙂 But it just seemed off, and then I noticed the blonde hair! LOL
I thought it was Cath’s phone thingie! LOL!
😆 I never thought that Cath’s bluetooth that would be the thing I couldn’t draw properly!!!
I’m dying here!!!
#31 – Steve with dress blue thigh holsters & peaked cap coming to sit with Danny at the courthouse in episode 3.14
#32 – Steve and Danno at the MMA event (really, inspired by Alex’s “I love you man” S2 outtake) episode 2.6
#33 – Steve wishing he could wear boardies instead of a tie in ep 2.12, Chin’s wedding
#34 – Steve driving a bus of rescued school children ep 2.11
#35 – Steve and Cath (my error, forgot to include her blue tooth) waving goodbye to that kid in ep 3.11
#36 – Steve and Chin laughing at Danny’s “Mr November” pic from ep 3.12
#37 – Steve and Danny fishing from ep 3.3
#38 – Steve watching Doris & Mary hug at the end of ep 3.7
#39 – Steve and Cath (who IS wearing her blue tooth) watch a horror movie in ep 3.5
#40 – Steve with Lucy!!! I should have made it obvious they were in the jungle…..
#41 – Steve and Danny playing football because I promise you I doodled a football (because it was super bowl time) and THEN those promo pics were released…..
#42 – This one I just made up myself, because Steve gets tasered twice in S1. So we assume he hates tasers.
#43 – Steve’s hilarious face off with Sang Min in ep 2.14 with Kono looking on (just out of frame, Kamekona eating his third $5 footlong subway sandwich)
#44 – Steve thinking about his Dad, ep 3.15
#45 – Steve and Danny, based on the final scene of ep 3.14
Yay! I got the bluetooth thingie!
LOL, I missed that Cath was wearing her bluetooth thingie on the sofa!
I should have had Steve’s arm around her back instead of up on the couch so it didn’t look like his hand was coming around her head…. it’s making me laugh now to imagine her blue tooth is his hand… it makes his arm very long and why is his hand coming around her face like that?!?!? Steve you weirdo. 😆
#31 and #36. I just noticed Danny has a tie!! ❤ such detail!!
yeah I think he needed something he was looking a little nekkid….
LOL, because the thigh holsters make McG look more nekkid, like all he has on is the thigh holsters. NOTE – I LIKE it that way 🙂 Do not change.
I’m sure there are Danno fans who love the ties like we love the thigh holsters.
I think there were but without the ties, the shirts got tighter and more buttons undone so I think we’ll live. 😉
Sounds like a good trade off. 😉
Lovely, I hope there will be more things he likes in Season 4. I hadn’t got the MMA one, thought Danny was drowning but didn’t know why it was cross wire! I loved that outtake (obvi as a sucker for bromance).
Perhaps we should do one on things Danny doesn’t like, would be quite a long list.
The things Danny doesn’t like — too easy! I actually back a year ago started the list of things Danny *did* like got one thing (the obvious) and then closed it down. 😆
Enjoyed reviewing the original ones and these are great too. Loved ghost dad in the light gray! Things Danno likes, haha short list. Mr. Negative
The original ones still make me laugh… they were so innocent & completely dopey of me to do, in retrospect…. glad I did though. 🙂
